Assistant Director For Public History and Red Bank Field School

The History Department at Rowan University is seeking an Assistant Director for its Public History and Red Bank Field School programs. The successful candidate should have a Ph.D., experience directing historical preservation sites, as well as evidence of effective teaching at the college level. Specifically, candidates should have demonstrated experience in the following areas and the ability to perform the tasks listed:
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to public history and material culture, with an ability to direct master’s theses on relevant topics;
  • Writing grants at the local, state, and federal level;
  • Directing historic preservation projects in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties;
  • Overseeing historic site management (including interpretation, education, exhibitions, and programming);
  • Supervising historic site staff and volunteer/docent programs;
  • Guiding student interns in the classroom and at historic sites, including the Red Bank Field School;
  • Assisting in the planning and development of Rowan’s Public History and Red Bank Field School programs, developing and recommending goals, policies, and procedures that comply with college policies and goals;
  • Developing performance standards, making performance evaluations, providing guidance and counsel to staff and student interns and recommends approval of personnel actions required by the department;
  • Advising students regarding program offerings, activities, and services. Providing guidance and assistance when unusual problems occur;
  • Serving on ad hoc and standing committees as required by the needs of the program and department;
  • Developing public relations materials.
