The Laboratory Safety Specialist will provide technical consolation and solutions occupational safety and health issues sitewide and will report to the Head of the occupational Safety and Health Division. Responsibilities
The PPPL Laboratory Safety Specialist will assure that all work conducted for the Laboratory and within assigned areas is done in a manner that does not compromise the safety and health of workers. Support PPPL safety programs to assure effectiveness and compliance with Federal Regulations. Core Duties:
- Evaluates work area and practices for proper safety controls and make requirement(s) to develop work practices that reduce the potential for accidents.
- Conduct periodic assessments to assure program effectiveness, including evaluating positive or negative safety trends and needed corrective measures.
- Lead the site wide ergonomics program including development/updates of policy, procedures, and training. Provide ergonomic evaluations of employees and assist with work modifications to enhance safety.
- Implements safety programs in assigned area of specialization such as chemical safety, lockout/tagout, hazardous waste and non-ionizing radiation.
- Review equipment specific procedures to ensure the safe operation and ensure implementation of Lab-wide procedures and training.
- Evaluates and implements PPPL’s Occupational Safety and Health programs to include personal protective equipment use, as well as the review or development of applicable training material.
- Provide professional oversight and implementation of additional safety programs including, but not limited to; scaffolds, ladders, office safety, fall protection, hoisting and rigging, aerial lifts, forklifts, compressed gases, and other general industrial or construction safety topics.
- Conduct field surveys associated with assessing and maintaining workplace safety conditions. Results of assessments will be communicated to affected employees, as applicable. Utilize PPPL HPI program to enhance this effort.
- Participate in Industrial Hygiene cross-training and conduct monitoring for physical stressors.
- Collect and maintain chemical inventory records for each lab.
- Ability to communicate site safety concerns to management and/or employees in a professional manner, along with suggestions of appropriate corrections/control measures.
- Assess confined space conditions and prepare confined space entry permits.
- Create and provide training and information to workers on safety related topics, including instructor-led classroom training and leading of small group safety meetings with other PPPL organizations.
- Participate in incident/injury investigations involving safety related issues and willingness to draft pairing reports.
- Review and assist in preparation of Job Hazard Analyses as needed for PPPL activities.
- Participate in pre-job briefings and project design reviews to assure safety is considered as part of process.
- Some participation with construction safety oversight as well as participating in job walkdowns as necessary.
- Perform or assist in other safety activities as directed by the
Safety Division Head or the Head of the ES&H
Department.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in occupational safety and health or related field. Experience may substitute for education.
- Minimum 5 years of demonstrated experience implementing applicable federal, state and local regulatory requirements.
- 5 years ES&H/ Industrial Safety experience at commercial, research facilities and/or DOE facilities.
- Knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations is required.
- Knowledge construction safety standards preferred but not required.
- Must have work experience in the detection and control of occupational hazards.
- Must have proficient computer, verbal and writing skills.
- Must be capable of accessing all work areas to physically view work practices and conduct inspections. This may involve bending, climbing, and kneeling. Must be able to periodically lift up to 25 lbs and wearing a variety of personal protective equipment.
- Most duties will be in an industrial/ research laboratory environment. Occasional work outdoors, in varying weather, to include heat and cold may be required.
