We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join a vibrant team of international researchers investigating the impacts of closely related species on phenotypic evolution through a combination of skeletal analyses, fieldwork, and phylogeographic modeling, all focused on Spiny lizards (genus Sceloporus) (See the NSF grant abstract here: https://nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2154898). The postdoc will join the Martins Lab at Arizona State University (ASU) and work on a collaborative project with Dr. Michelle Lawing (Texas A&M University), Dr. Julio Rivera (Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine), and Dr. Jaime Zúñiga-Vega (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). Anticipated to start August 2023.

Essential duties

  1. Conduct geometric morphometric analyses of lizard skeletons, including training and supervising a team of student researchers in scoring 3-dimensional CT images. Participate in month-long field expeditions and ecological surveys in Mexico and the southwestern US and contribute to species occurrence modeling to identify critical habitats for lizard species. Contribute to phylogenetic comparative reconstructions of species assemblages through time and space. Collaborate with project leadership team to guide research directions and coordinate efforts. Coordinate and direct outreach activities associated with project research. Write scientific papers associated with the research. Travel to meetings to present results. Be an active member in research group activities (e.g., participate in lab meetings, mentor students).

Minimum qualifications

  1. Successful candidates must have at the time of appointment an earned doctorate in a relevant field such as evolutionary biology, ecology, or the equivalent terminal degree in their field. Must have strong computational skills. Must have the capacity to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams. A strong record of scholarly achievement. Excellent communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse students, faculty, staff, and community.

Desired qualifications

  1. A demonstrated commitment to supporting an enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion Special emphasis will be placed on candidates who explain how their research would both benefit from and advance research that integrates across levels and disciplines of evolutionary ecology.   Experience in geometric morphometrics, phylogenetic comparative analyses, and international fieldwork, and who prioritize inclusion while mentoring student researchers and developing innovative outreach efforts.
