The University of Southern Maine's Department of Theatre invites applications for a full-time, academic year (September to May) Lecturer in Theatre: Costume Design/Costume Shop Director, to begin in August 2023. This is a two-year renewable position upon satisfactory performance and mutual agreement. The USM Department of Theatre is an active Bachelor of Arts program with a strong commitment to the liberal arts mission.

The successful candidate will manage and have oversight of the costume shop, supervise work study students and costume-related production assignments, and have strong collaboration and mentoring skillsEach semester the successful candidate will:
  • Oversee the build of each main stage production (currently 2 per semester)
    • manage costume shop budgets, supplies and equipment
    • supervise and mentor student designers
    • supervise costume shop practicum instructors
  • Teach One (1) 3 credit course:
    • Costume Design (typically even falls)
    • Theatrical Makeup (typically every spring)
    • Advanced Design or other courses in area of expertise
  • Design One (1) department mainstage production
  • Advise theatre majors on academic degree progress
  • Collaborate with the Department of Theatre and dance minor program faculty and staff on recruitment strategies and activities
  • Serve on Department & College committees as needed
This position will be located on our Gorham Campus will pay annual salary of $49,725. This is an on campus, in-person teaching position.

The BA in Theatre at the University of Southern Maine offers students a holistic exploration of the theatre arts with a curriculum that provides a strong foundation across theatrical disciplines while holding space for students to build a personalized course of study according to their interests and professional goals. Students will have the opportunity to take courses in Design and Technology, History and Literature, and Performance while participating in mainstage productions. Through a wide-ranging production season, interdisciplinary collaborations, community and school outreach, and interactive theatre experiences, the University of Southern Maine’s Department of Theatre contributes to the rich cultural, creative, and artistic life of the greater Portland area and the state of Maine. Qualifications:
  • MFA in Theatre Design or related fields by the time of the appointment.
  • Minimum of one year of professional/practical work in the areas of rendering, costume design, costume construction and costume shop management.
  • Minimum of one year of professional costume design experience.
