Position Summary

The financial and budget analyst serves as a problem-solving point person for a wide variety of financial matters in the Department of Statistics. This position prepares all financial reports, provides general bookkeeping support to the department, maintains and updates department accounting system, verifies department internal excel spreadsheets with IO to make sure all expenses post correctly, and provides faculty with account statements.

We are seeking candidates who have demonstrated ability to lead and/or work collaboratively in teams comprised of individuals of diverse backgrounds, skills, and perspectives.

This position is hiring at a starting salary between $60,000 and $70,000 per year and entails work on Rice University’s campus, with the potential for some remote work/flexible work arrangements.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Three years of related experience in general bookkeeping and accounting experience
Skills Required
    • Advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database software
    • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and accounting principles
    • Advanced knowledge of accounting systems
    • Good communication skills, both oral and written
    • Intermediate problem solving and critical thinking skills
    • Ability to work independently, owning responsibility for timely completion of work
    • Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple and sometimes competing deadlines
Substitutions
  • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
Essential Functions
  • Performs general accounting activities, including the preparation, maintenance and reconciliation of ledger accounts and financial statements
  • Analyzes general accounting transactions and information to summarize current financial position at the unit or organization-wide level
  • Collects data and performs research on details of transactions
  • Generates, reviews, analyzes and communicates financial data that reflects actual financial performance against approved budgets
  • Prepares and presents quantitative and qualitative analyses focusing on variances from budget and prior data
  • Maintains and reviews accounting process controls; recommends and implements any approved modifications; performs preliminary analysis and recommends solutions
  • Produces and analyzes moderately complex financial reports, often from multiple systems; prepares basic management information reports
  • May act as a lead and provide direction and training to less experience accounting staff.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions
  • Provides advice to faculty and department administration on balances and on fund expenditures such as payroll, travel, and purchases, including advice regarding compliance with relevant guidelines
  • Designs and generates detailed monthly financial status reports to provide to faculty and researchers for all research and local funds
  • Designs and generates detailed monthly financial status reports for all departmental funds to provide to the chair and administrator
  • Provides day-to-day leadership and administration of all funds within the department ensuring appropriate use of funds as determined by the university and the sponsor guidelines
  • Tracks research and A1 funds, reconciling transactions to Banner accounting system
  • Responsible for ensuring financial compliance
  • Responsible for effort reporting, advising faculty and administration when issues occur
  • Prepares, reviews, and/or approves iO Expense reports and procurement requisitions.
  • Resolves issues found during review and reconciliation of transactions
  • Meets with the Dean’s Office financial group on a regular basis or as needed to ensure financial compliance .
