CONTEXT:

Under the general direction of the Associate Director, the Assistant Director, Student Orientation works collaboratively to develop, plan, and implement comprehensive orientation programs for new undergraduate students and their families. The Assistant Director directly supervises several student leader teams and facilitates their training, development, and supervision. In addition, the Assistant Director coordinates and implements large scale campus-wide events and programs. This position must work collaboratively with key campus partners including academic deans and administrative staff within and outside of the Division of Student Life to create programming that supports students' transition, retention, and success at the University of Delaware. The Assistant Director must possess a high level of independent judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with the Director and Associate Director to strategically develop, coordinate, and administer comprehensive orientation and transition programs for all new undergraduate students and their families.
  • Develop and coordinate the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of orientation and transition program student staff including up to 22 Orientation Leaders and 50 UD Welcome Ambassadors. Conduct regular formal and informal performance appraisals of staff to assess students’ growth and development.
  • Instruct UNIV335, Orientation Leader Training Course, a weekly 1-credit course in spring semester. Design course syllabus, develop lesson plans, evaluate student performance, and assign grades. Serve as independent study instructor for UNIV366.
  • Supervise and train two graduate interns.
  • Collaborate with Associate Director in the development and implementation of transition programming for specialized populations, including transfer, commuter, veteran, and international students. Design programming and independently implement events to support the persistence of these student populations.
  • Oversee and coordinate on-site logistics and processes for large-scale NSO programs and events.
  • Develop and build course content for online NSO Canvas course, identifying and assessing learning outcomes.
  • Serve on the UD Welcome Days Programming and Operations committees, assisting with the overall coordination of fall and spring programming as well as communication and marketing. Design and implement specific events and programs for specialized populations during UD Welcome Days, including transfer, commuter, veteran and international students as well as spring admits.
  • Develop and implement professional development and social opportunities for department’s diverse student leader teams. Design and facilitate student leader training retreat and workshops to enhance student leader learning and growth.
  • Assist with implementation of parent and family programming and events.
  • Serve on variety of University and Division of Student Life committees as needed, including Transfer Student Working Group.
  • Perform miscellaneous job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, counseling services or other related field and three years of full-time professional experience working with college students.
  • Experience working in orientation or first year programming in a university setting preferred.
  • Ability to motivate, develop, direct and train assigned staff including coordinating and supervising work.
  • Experience coordinating large scale events and programs both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of equity, diversity, inclusion, multicultural, and LGBTQ+ issues
  • Understanding of college student development theory and practice within the areas of orientation, transition, and retention.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks concurrently and make independent decisions in keeping with the level of the position.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with key campus stakeholders.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to work flexible hours when required.
  • Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
