ACADEMIC DIRECTOR, SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS - School of Architecture (71100)

Location: Brooklyn, NY

Description:
The School of Architecture at Pratt Institute invites nominations and applications for the position of Academic Director (Head of Program) for the graduate program in Sustainable Environmental Systems. Sustainable Environmental Systems (SES) is one of eleven graduate and undergraduate programs in the School of Architecture at Pratt Institute, a 4500-student university in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.

SES is situated within the Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment (GCPE) whose mission is to provide a professionally oriented education to a student body with diverse cultural, educational, and professional backgrounds. Using a multidisciplinary approach, GCPE teaches participatory practice as the best way to support and advocate for just, equitable communities. Students graduate equipped with the knowledge of theory, technical capacity, collaborative skills, and radical critical thinking abilities necessary to plan for ethical, healthy, resilient and inclusive communities. GCPE programs focus on applied research. Through studios, theses, capstones, demonstration projects, research initiatives, partnerships and public programs, students have an opportunity to make an impact.

The 40-credit, STEM-designated Master of Science in Sustainable Environmental Systems, offered in the evenings at Pratt's School of Architecture on the Brooklyn campus, is designed to meet today's increasing demand for environmental professionals. Students learn the interdisciplinary skills and systems-thinking approach needed to assess contemporary environmental issues; catalyze innovative environmental problem-solving; uphold environmental and social justice; and engage diverse stakeholders in designing and developing sustainable plans, policies, and communities. Graduates are prepared to take on a range of roles as environmental designers, policy analysts, sustainability consultants, low-impact developers, researchers, and advocates, collaborating with environmental scientists, policymakers, and communities. The SES program is unique in its combination of science, design, and policy. By uniting a foundation of theoretical and technical core courses with innovative mini-courses, the program offers a uniquely comprehensive curriculum that fosters exposure to cutting-edge practicing professionals. The program encourages students to closely examine the relationships between the environment, policy, and systems design.
