Job Description

The UMKC School of Law has a wide range of courses and clinics, as well as local, regional, and national community of practice endeavors, and other activities at intersections of innovation, economic development, technology, business, and civic and social benefit initiatives (collectively, “Entrepreneurship Programs”). Those programs include many interdisciplinary and multi-institution collaborations, community engagement, and service-learning components. As an Assistant Clinical Professor, this hire’s functions would include (i) providing teaching in clinical and quasi-clinical projects-based and skills training entrepreneurship and innovation courses, and (ii) assisting in the coordination, growth, and collective impact of the Law School’s Entrepreneurship Programs with the many collaborators with which the Law School engages through them.

The Assistant Clinical Professor in Entrepreneurship Programs will:
  • Under the direction of the Law School’s Director of the Entrepreneurial Legal Services Clinic and the Intellectual Property Clinic, supervise law students on selected client engagements, and assist with community education on matters at intersections of law, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
  • In addition to teaching in the two above-referenced clinics, teach or co-teach courses in a teaching package drawn from among the following courses: Entrepreneurship & New Venture Creation; Entrepreneurial Urban Development; Social Entrepreneurship Ventures; and Transactional Lawyering Skills.
  • Under the direction of the Law School’s Director of Entrepreneurship Programs, assist with:
--Administration of two national platforms in which the Law School has leadership role ( www.eshiplaw.org and www.thelegaltechlab.com )

--Coordination of collaborations of various elements of the Law School’s Entrepreneurship Programs with the UMKC Innovation Center, Regnier Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Center for Neighborhoods, other UMKC academic units, UM System entrepreneurship endeavors, local governments, local community organizations, other organizations, such as relevant sections or committees of the Association of American Law Schools, and the national MetroLab Network (see https://metrolabnetwork.org/ )

--Grants and other resources seeking activities for programs and events associated with the Law School’s Entrepreneurship Programs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • A license to practice law in the State of Missouri or be eligible and willing to obtain Missouri licensure.
  • Experience with managing a multi-faceted workload.
  • Prior experiences as an entrepreneur and/or working with entrepreneurs that would help inform teaching law students and students from other disciplines on intersections of law, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
Salary

This is a 12-month, full-time, ranked non-tenure track academic position under a contractual appointment for a one-year renewable term with successful evaluation. Salary is in the range of $65,000-$70,000 per year and commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position includes full benefits, including health insurance and CLE requirements.
