Job Description

Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus, is seeking two (2) full-time Biology faculty members to fill positions starting August 2023 . We are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated teachers who exhibit a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. Important qualities expected in the candidate include strong verbal and written communication skills, experience working with students of different backgrounds, and commitment to the community college mission. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.

Montgomery College has a long history of successfully preparing students for transfer to four-year institutions like the University of Maryland, Georgetown University, George Washington University, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the Universities at Shady Grove. Montgomery College has excellent science facilities and equipment as well. MC’s biological science buildings are less than 15 years old. The successful candidate will be teaching in our newest science building scheduled to open in Spring 2024.

The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a multi-cultural environment, and will welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities. The faculty member will primarily teach our Principles of Biology 1, and genetics and/or microbiology courses. Faculty duties include classroom instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, professional inquiry, committee work and utilizing instructional technology. The majority of our courses use open educational resources (OERs) to yield cost savings for the students and the most current content for faculty. Incoming faculty will utilize OERs in alignment with the other faculty in the discipline. The opportunity to teach honors students or student research is also supported and encouraged.

Teaching assignments may include various delivery modes, such as face-to-face, on-line, remote, hybrid and/or blended formats during days, evenings and weekends. Montgomery College has three campuses and instructs courses at area high schools. Faculty may be assigned to any of these campuses and/or teaching online.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Teaches non-major and major-level courses; teaching assignment expected to include BIOL 150: Principles of Biology I and BIOL 222: General Genetics and/or BIOL 210: Microbiology. Opportunities to teach Principles of Biology II, environmental science and/or molecular and cellular biology courses exist.
  • Teaches 30 semester hours per academic year. Prepares course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments and handouts; evaluates and grades students' exams, assignments, and papers.
  • Teaches a varied schedule of courses that may include day, night, early morning, weekend and/or accelerated sections, compressed and online. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer classes.
  • Works with embedded academic coaches and/or provides tutoring sessions for biology coursework.
  • Applies culturally relevant pedagogies to the teaching and learning process.
  • Engages students in their learning through active, collaborative learning approaches.
  • Works with other faculty in the discipline to develop free of cost course materials for students using Open Educational Resources.
  • Incorporates the use of an educational enterprise platform (Blackboard) and other relevant technology into instruction, including inexpensive or no-cost resources in the development and delivery of instruction.
  • Meets with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college students.
  • Advises students about program curriculum, transfer options to four-year institutions, and professional/career opportunities.
  • Serves on, or leads, department, discipline, campus and college committees.
  • Maintains an active program of professional development and participates in professional organizations and activities.
  • Engages in the expansion and implementation of assessments for courses, programs and learning outcomes with the goal of increasing student success.
Additional Information:
  • A candidate on Optional Practical Training (OPT) is not eligible for this position.
  • A candidate with an international degree is required to have an U.S. degree equivalency prior to hire.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s of Biological Science, Zoology, Cell Science, Environmental Science, or other closely related field.
  • Teaching experience at the college level (associates, bachelors, or masters-level teaching); teaching done as a graduate student or as a teaching assistant will be considered.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in an academic or industry environment.
  • Ability to effectively engage with and facilitate learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
  • Understanding of and commitment to student success including increasing retention, transfer and graduation.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Biological Science, Zoology, Cell Science, Environmental Science, or other closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of full-time teaching experience at the college level, equivalent in industry, or combination.
  • Demonstrated experience using various teaching modalities (seat-based, remote, blended/hybrid, and online).
  • Familiarity with teaching technologies (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas).
  • Demonstrated experience teaching major-level courses such as genetics, microbiology, cell biology, environmental biology or ecology.
  • Experience teaching dual enrollment, Early College or in high school at the college level.
  • Demonstrated experience using techniques to engage students in the classroom.
Hiring Range: $62,319 to $91,218.
