Senior Financial Aid Compliance Specialist (Flexible WV)

This is a flexible role based at our Charles Town, WV location with the ability to work remotely a few days per week.

The Financial Aid Compliance Senior Specialist will be involved in all aspects of Federal Student Aid at APUS. The Senior Specialist would be part of the team that conducts process reviews, maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), assess system functionality and administers Federal Student Aid to help ensure compliance and consistency. The Sr. Specialist requires a well-rounded, foundational knowledge of Federal Student Aid principles and guidelines and an aptitude in performing research and analysis to determine implications on policies and procedures. They must demonstrate an ability to apply critical thinking, reasoning, and logic to guide actions and decisions. The Sr. Specialist will also facilitate the development and delivery of training and job aids across financial aid operations.

Excellent organizational skills are required to facilitate efficient processes and maintain documented procedures. The Senior Specialist must demonstrate the ability to manage time and prioritize projects effectively to initiate workflow and meet project goals and deadlines.

Good communication skills are essential for this position. The Senior Specialist must be able to clearly explain FSA concepts, regulatory and policy guidance, and report outcomes from research, process reviews and training. The role requires coordination within Compliance and with staff members across Financial Aid Operations.

Responsibilities:
  • Focus on tasks related to enrollment reporting, default management, student loan exit counseling and repayment, documented policies and procedures, Consumer Information and training.
  • Support implementation of compliant Title IV policies and procedures through training and review.
  • Monitors communications from department of education and professional affiliations to stay abreast of current regulations, policy guidance and best practices as well as identify and report related impacts.
  • Conducts regular process reviews for assessing systems functionality, compliance and consistency in applying federal guidelines and internal policies.
  • Successfully uses resources, reports, queries and available system data to perform process reviews.
  • Effectively communicates process review findings, metrics, and recommendations to the Compliance Manager and appropriate process owners.
  • Supports student financial literacy and default management activities in coordination with ECMC, Loan Servicers, and the Department of Education.
  • Maintains proficiency with all APUS systems and third-party databases (ECMC, NSLDS, COD, NSC, Loan Servicer Sites, SAINT)
  • Assists in maintaining SOPs, Policy and Procedure manual, job aids, reference materials, and training resources.
  • Identifies areas of information gaps and needs for training across financial aid.
  • Develops and delivers training materials on Federal Student Aid processes, rules, and regulations.
  • Vets and facilitates webinars for financial aid professionals.
  • Responds to telephone and e-mail inquiries and requests from staff regarding the federal student aid process.
  • Responds to student emails and inquiries in the Loan Counseling Queue.
  • Performs work in support of the university's fraud/abuse detection and prevention initiatives.
  • Promotes effective communication and change management.
  • Offers recommendations for improvements for compliance, training and efficiency.
  • Performs User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and production verify, as needed.
  • Coordinates priorities and work schedule with manager.
  • Meets or exceeds performance goals as determined by the Compliance Manager.
  • Maintains positive working relationships to achieve goals and ensure seamless internal/external customer service.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on multiple complex assignments requiring application of a well-defined knowledge of Title IV financial aid.
  • Ability to work within established guidelines as it relates to administering federal student aid.
  • Ability to identify resources and retrieve relevant information to effectively resolve issues, support training and make policy recommendations.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot problems.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization skills with attention for detail.
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize multiple projects effectively.

Required Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree required OR minimum of three years financial aid and APUS work experience.
  • Minimum of two years' experience with Windows based applications, specifically: Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
