Job Description Summary:
Samuel Merritt University’s Master of Social Work program is seeking a qualified and experienced candidate to serve as the inaugural Director of Practicum Education and Instructor. It is a full time 12-month position. This program falls under the College of Health Sciences (CoHS). The Practicum Education Director is an administrator of the department responsible for accomplishing all necessary practicum related tasks. This position reports directly to the Department Chair. The Practicum Education Director works collaboratively in developing and delivering a comprehensive MSW curriculum that prepares students to practice social work in a variety of health care settings. The Practicum Education Director is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of practicum education programming for the MSW program, including the assurance that all aspects of CSWE accreditation standards are met.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership, direction, and management of practicum education which encompasses: recruiting, vetting, approving, and oversight of practicum/internship agencies and supervisors; placement of students in agencies; supervision and offering support to practicum education faculty.
  • The development of and oversight of practicum education manuals, policies, orientations, and assessment tools.
  • Engage in MSW Student Academic Advising and Professional Social Work Advising.
  • Recruit, vet, train, and mentor faculty who are teaching course seminars and conducting required site visits.
  • Assure that all student practicum hours are tracked and required CSWE documentation is maintained on a regular basis.
  • Maintain practicum manuals, forms, and agency affiliation agreements and assure that these are accessible for agency supervisors and students.
  • Ensure practicum education is delivered in compliance with CSWE standards and requirements (e.g., collecting assessment data and materials for reaffirmation).
  • Ability to identify and negotiate clinical affiliations with appropriate clinical settings.
  • Ability to teach in person or on line.
  • Teach up to two practicum seminars per year as needed and conduct site visits for students enrolled in these seminars.
  • Cultivate and maintain collaborations with designated partner agencies.
  • Develop, maintain and update practicum database and learning management systems (LMS).
  • Conduct annual orientations/ training of agency practicum supervisors.
  • Conduct regular orientations for students entering practicum education.
  • Mediate placement conflicts, conduct plan of action meetings for students of concern, and reassign students at practicum sites as needed. Resolve grade conflicts related to practicum courses.
  • Collaborate with appropriate SMU faculty and staff to create opportunities for continuing education unit (CEU) training for students, practicum supervisors and community members and maintain appropriate paperwork to ensure compliance with the state board approval.
  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as necessary.
  • Participate in the College’s partnerships team, working collaboratively to build relationships with community partners to benefit the entire college.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize workload.
Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. To demonstrate readiness to lead this realm, the candidate must have experience working in an institution of higher education in the Social Work discipline with an MSW from an accredited college or university, and qualified to serve at the rank of Instructor.

This position also requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

Minimum Qualifications Required:
  • Masters of Social Work (MSW) degree from a CSWE-accredited program
  • Two years post-MSW practice experience
  • Experience teaching in higher education
  • Experience in leadership role
  • Computer expertise with word processing, e-mail, spreadsheet and presentation software
  • Lead with a DEI focus
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program
  • Five years of full-time, post-MSW practice experience
  • Field/Practicum Education Director Experience or Field/Practicum Education Liaison Experience
  • Previous experience with CSWE accreditation
  • 5 years of clinical experience and practice in social work
  • Practice experience in one or more of the following areas
    • Medical Social Work
    • Aging, palliative care
    • Hospice care
    • Community health/mental health
    • Integrated behavioral health care
    • Public health/health promotion
    • Social justice / community empowerment practice
  • Current LCSW, or Independent licensure within Social Work
  • Professional and/or Academic Advising experience
  • Previous experience working with diverse students and client/patient populations.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and department management in higher education
  • Familiarity with state, local, and private sector health agencies, as well as with social work’s professional licensure procedures in the State of California
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Pay Range: $98k - $110
