CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the general direction of the Director, the Associate Director, Orientation and Transition Programs will assist in the development and implementation of comprehensive orientation and transition programs for all new undergraduate students and their families at the University of Delaware and oversee the unit in absence of the Director. The Associate Director will serve as a key leader in developing productive partnerships with campus stakeholders, including faculty and academic college staff, Division of Student Life staff, and other key partners to enhance and support student success, engagement, and retention of new students at UD. The Associate Director will work with the Director to identify strategic priorities for addressing issues of success and retention for new students based on institutional assessment data and develop programs and initiatives to meet these needs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly assist with the development, coordination and implementation of high-profile, comprehensive orientation and transition programs for all new undergraduate students and families.
  • Assist the Director in the day-to-day operations of OTP and provide guidance and direction to staff involved in OTP programs and services.
  • Supervise Assistant Director, Student Orientation and Assistant Director, Parent and Family Engagement. Conduct annual performance reviews and goal setting processes.
  • Create, administer, and analyze assessment for undergraduate orientation programs. Produce comprehensive assessment reports to document program outcomes and satisfaction as well as create individualized assessment reports for specific populations (e.g., campus partners, student leaders).
  • Develop and coordinate transition programming for specialized populations, including transfer, commuter, veteran, and international students. Identify opportunities for campus collaboration related to the transition and retention of these populations.
  • Develop communication strategy and calendar in collaboration with Director and Student Life Communications Director for all orientation, transition, and family programs.
  • Lead UD Welcome Days Programming and Operations committees with Director. Direct the development and implementation of new student programming and coordinate with the Student Life Communications Director to create communications and marketing for welcome events.
  • Oversee Assistant Director, Parent and Family Engagement in strategic planning and development of family programming, events, and communications.
  • Co-lead the Parents & Family Weekend committee with Assistant Director, Parent and Family Engagement.
  • Oversee Assistant Director, Student Orientation in recruitment, selection, and training of all paraprofessional student staff, including Orientation Leaders and UD Welcome Days welcome ambassadors.
  • Oversee and organize all OTP programs and initiatives through Asana, identifying processes and timelines to ensure operational effectiveness and programmatic success.
  • Assist the Director with development and management of orientation registration processes through Slate in coordination with Admissions.
  • Assist the Director in coordinating with Assistant Deans in the academic colleges to implement academic advising and programming during NSO and UD Welcome Days
  • Coordinate editing and printing of key publications, including orientation newsletters, family guide, and student planner, and oversee editing and maintenance of website content in collaboration with the Student Life Communications Team.
  • Directly contribute to the creation and achievement of a department vision and strategic plan. Implement department short- and long-range goals and initiatives.
  • Lead the research and program development on cutting-edge best practices and trends in orientation and transition programs and coordinate staff development initiatives within OTP.
  • Assist the Director in the management of a diverse, complex annual budget of approximately $1 million.
  • Represent the department on a variety of Division of Student Life and University committees.
  • Perform job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree and four years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's Degree in student personnel, higher education, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in collegiate student affairs, orientation, transition, or first year programming preferred.
  • Knowledge of student learning and development theory and practice, specifically as it relates to the needs and issues facing first year and transfer students.
  • Experience in designing and implementing programming or large-scale events.
  • Experience with leadership and supervision of staff including the ability to motivate, develop, direct and train assigned staff; coordinating and supervising work; fostering a cooperative work environment; and maintaining employee morale.
  • Commitment to and knowledge of equity, diversity, inclusion, multicultural, and LGBTQ+ issues.
  • Ability to think strategically and actively contribute to the creation and implementation of short and long-range department goals.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and effectively prioritize among competing needs.
  • Ability to creatively problem solve and independently initiate and develop action plan for addressing identified issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with key campus stakeholders.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
