POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Join a new and growing, dynamic department of practitioners and scholars dedicated to social justice as a post-doctoral teaching fellow. The Department of Social Work and Child Advocacy (SWCA) invites applications for our university’s Post-Doctoral Teaching and Learning Fellows Program (PDTLF). This is a new program that is seeking to identify exceptional candidates who want to engage in teaching and advanced pedagogy to diverse students. The program provides mentoring support and allows interested candidates to develop a teaching repertoire that is deep that prepares students and guides them to engaged futures as social work practitioners.

SWCA offers minors in Child Advocacy and Policy and in Social Work, a BA and MA in Child Advocacy and Policy, and an MSW with a concentration in children, youth, and families. The PDTLF must be able to teach and work from an anti-oppressive and social justice lens and help us expand and build on our commitment to anti-oppressive pedagogy. Candidates from marginalized groups are strongly encouraged to apply. The PDTLF will teach in both the (1) Child Advocacy and Policy and (2) Social Work programs and will be paired with a faculty mentor for the duration of the position.

The PDTLF position will last one year (12 months), with the potential for renewal into a second year, and is targeted to support individuals who can benefit in a focused way from a university teaching experience. The fellow’s teaching load over 12 months would be 27 total credits, which is 9 courses, to be spread over the 12-month contract. In addition to teaching, the fellow would (1) hold workshops for our faculty/staff on DEI pedagogy; (2) advise the SWCA Curriculum Committee regarding recommended changes in course content on existing courses, new courses, and potential new programs; and (3) partner with chair, graduate program coordinators, and adjunct coordinator regarding infusing DEI perspectives into our pedagogy and other classroom-based activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A doctorate in a social science discipline is required; in addition, an MSW degree is preferred, but not required. Expertise in child and family-related content, as well as social justice theory, approaches, pedagogy, or practice. These skills and knowledge base would enable the postdoc to teach across both programs in the department.

COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES AND THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK AND CHILD ADVOCACY
The Department of Social Work and Child Advocacy (SWCA) at Montclair State University is a community of interdisciplinary scholars and practitioners who prepare undergraduate and graduate students to be leaders in the promotion of child and family wellbeing. Guided by the principles of social, economic, and racial justice, we combine the fields of psychology, social work, and law to improve lives at every stage of human development. Through our scholarship we create knowledge that when combined with our practice approaches advance child advocacy and social work initiatives to serve the wider community. Our interdisciplinary curriculum equips graduates with the requisite knowledge and skills required in their professions including an understanding of policies and systems, human development, and evidence-based and culturally-sensitive practices.

SWCA offers a BA, a minor, and an MA in Child Advocacy and Policy, and a minor in Social Work and an MSW with a concentration in children, youth, and families. Content is delivered to students through both face-to-face and online teaching. SWCA is home to ~800 students, 17 full-time faculty, 4 staff, and ~45 community practitioners who serve as adjuncts. The department is in year 2 of implementing a new five-year strategic plan.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) is the University’s largest academic unit with over 5,000 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. CHSS awards BA, MA, and PhD degrees through its 16 departments and 9 programs with over 30 majors and 50 minors. Company

 Montclair State University

Montclair State University defines what it means to be a university with a public purpose — one that not only creates transformational opportunities for students, but also partners with communities to make a difference in the lives of others.

Montclair invites students to imagine the world they want to live in and empowers them to develop the skills and knowledge to create it. As a solutions engine, we ask: How can we harness the power of 21,000 students and 1,800 professors to be a force for good in the world?

This distinctive approach continues to attract students, propelling Montclair to become New Jersey’s second largest institution of higher learning, and one of its most diverse. Under President Jonathan Koppell, the University enrolled the largest entering class in the University’s history two years in a row.

Founded in 1908, Montclair has grown big enough to offer more than 300 programs across 13 colleges and schools at all degree levels – and yet, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 17 to 1, is still small enough for students to receive personalized attention from professors and staff who truly care. Students have numerous opportunities to conduct research with professors who are respected leaders in their fields.

More than 50% of Montclair’s students identify as underrepresented minorities. It is New Jersey’s largest Hispanic-Serving Institution, serving more Latinx students than any other university in the state.

Montclair’s highly diverse students thrive in the University’s supportive, welcoming environment. Their graduation rates outperform state and national benchmarks and predictions with U.S. News & World Report ranking Montclair as seventh among national universities in graduation rate performance in 2022. It is consistently recognized as one of the most inclusive and best value universities and ranked No. 21 in the country in social mobility.

Many of Montclair’s students are working and raising families, and the University offers flexible programs that give them the opportunity to learn in ways that work best for them, on campus or online, in real time or asynchronously.

Faculty include winners of a MacArthur fellowship, Fulbright grants and Emmy awards, and NSF, NEH and NIH grants, among many other distinctions. These highly respected researchers, scholars and creators are dedicated to student success, and they are always innovating to meet the needs of learners and of the state. Montclair has launched dozens of new degree and certificate programs, and offers more combined bachelor’s and master’s degree programs than any other university in New Jersey – empowering students to enter the workforce faster, with stronger skills and for less cost.

Montclair’s mission is to elevate its students and partners, and in so doing, help make the world a better place.

At Montclair State, our employees are among our most valuable assets.

When you work at Montclair State, you join a talented, diverse and inclusive community of employees who work together to support the educational mission of the University.

You are part of a leading institution of higher education in New Jersey. Our 11 colleges and schools serve 21,000 students on a beautiful 252-acrea, vibrant suburban campus just 12 miles from New York City.

As a Montclair State University employee, you enjoy access to:

  • Comprehensive health, dental and retirement benefits to discounted membership to the campus recreation center and tuition reimbursement
