Position Focus:
The Director will provide leadership and oversight for the Alumni Engagement (AE) team within the Office of Alumni Engagement and Development (AED), planning and executing the strategy and vision related to the engagement of Yale Law School's (YLS) graduates. The Director will formulate and implement comprehensive and innovative programs that offer value to YLS's nearly 13,000 alumni who are geographically diverse and have a wide array of personal and professional interests. The director partners with colleagues across Alumni Engagement to create an integrated advancement model in which alumni engagement is meaningfully and intentionally embedded in development activities.

The Director will lead based upon significant experience in the area of alumni relations, including understanding the impact of alumni and donor relationships in advancing an academic institution; building credible, productive relationships with graduates and donors; establishing collaborative partnerships with colleagues; and bringing energy, vision, and diplomacy to this position.

The Director reports to the Executive Director for Advancement Services and serves as a member of AED's senior leadership team. Work collaboratively with colleagues to formulate a strategic plan, set annual goals, and determine policies and procedures that will lead to greater alumni participation; innovative programming; and stronger ties with our alumni. Develop and implement operational plans for programs, initiatives, and communications that engage alumni through a wide range of activities. Lead the AE team using data to improve, enhance, and measure the effectiveness of existing programs while formulating initiatives that will resonate with alumni. Provide meaningful and lifelong engagement, ultimately leading to participation in giving to YLS, reflecting a solid understanding of alumni interests. Partner with the AED colleagues on strategic initiatives to ensure effective integration of philanthropic and engagement activities for alumni, students, and friends. Manage a budget and set long-term budget needs assessments. Ensure that Alumni Engagement is viewed as a valued partner that helps colleagues meet the goals and objectives of their programs and the School's overall mission. Utilize the University's CRM to document all planned and completed alumni interactions, event participation, and strategies. Benchmark with similar institutions and identify best practices to continually engage alumni in ways that are distinctively Yale Law School. Provide guidance and promote excellence through well-defined and measurable goals for personnel. Foster a culture of achievement through mastery of best practices and implementation of new ideas in which effective teamwork, collaboration, accountability, proactivity, strategic thinking, and innovation are expected, recognized, and rewarded.

Essential Duties:
1. Promotes alumni engagement by managing a portfolio of alumni groups and organizations, such as regional clubs and shared interest groups, through volunteer management, events, programs and communications. 2. Plans and pursues opportunities to support the alumni association’s mission to engage members of the alumni community. 3. Tracks program budgets and determines financial needs to run programs effectively. 4. Develops and implements a marketing and outreach strategy focused on internal staff, students, faculty, administration and external (alumni, friends/partners, parents) contacts to expand the reach of alumni organizations and their impact on the university’s alumni affairs objectives. 5. Partners with campus colleagues, such as Office of Development, graduate and professional schools, and Office of Admissions to develop, engage and cultivate volunteer leaders and alumni audiences generally. 6. Devises marketing strategies and publicity campaigns for alumni activities and programs; determines logistics, speakers, and content to ensure programs run smoothly. 7. Consults with internal and external contacts on devising effective activities and programs to meet the University goals and objectives. 8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in a related field and four years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated success in building and leading an alumni relations program that is aligned with School priorities and alumni interests and integrated into fundraising activities.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated ability to lead by promoting professionalism, mutual respect, creativity, entrepreneurship, appropriate risk-taking, and cross-organizational cooperation.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability to motivate and engage through highly effective presentations and communications.

Ability and willingness to travel, and work some weekends and evenings as needed.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Prefer seven (7) years of related experience. Experience in a complex, matrixed university setting working with alumni and donors. Experience in alumni relations, event management, volunteer management, and fundraising.
