(Job #525521) Student Services Professional 1B, Children's Center Teacher (2 Positions), Children's Center. Salary Range: $4,066-$5,752 monthly. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan, permanent position with a one-year probationary period in Children's Center. Position Summary:

Cal Poly Humboldt's Children's Center is an accredited, grant-funded and state-funded child development program which provides quality child development services for students, staff and faculty of Cal Poly Humboldt. Staffing includes 11 professional employees and approximately 65 student employees. During the academic year the program serves approximately 100 families, with approximately 60 families being served during the summer months. In support of Cal Poly Humboldt's academic mission and focus, the Children's Center serves as an observation and training facility for students pursuing academic credit and professional credentialing.

The Children's Center teacher is responsible for the successful operation of one toddler or pre-school classroom for children ages 3 months - 5 years and works a full 12 month schedule. This position works collaboratively with other Children's Center staff and is under the direct lead of the Assistant Director and Director of the Children Center. Teachers may be responsible for providing oversight (supervision) to 10 - 15 Student Assistants. This area falls under the administrative leadership of the Executive Director of Auxiliary Operations.

Key Responsibilities:

65% Plan and implement the classroom program in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the Children's Center

  • Integrate the philosophy and goals of the program in relation to the developmental stages and cultural diversity of the children enrolled
  • Promote and supervise the healthy emotional, social, intellectual and physical development of each child
  • Plan and prepare learning centers and activities on a daily basis
  • Develop warm, comfortable communication with children
  • Evaluate health of children enrolled on a daily basis
  • Conduct and maintain records of assessments and developmental profiles of children and utilize in planning and conducting daily activities
  • Establish and maintain an environment that is developmentally appropriate and challenging for each child enrolled
  • Ensure the health and safety of children enrolled in the program
  • Serve meals and snacks to children enrolled daily
  • Provide any necessary first aid for children and maintain emergency procedures
  • Work collaboratively with other Preschool Teachers7% Participate in

  • 15% Provide leadership in the initial orientation and ongoing training, supervision and evaluation of Student Assistants and work-study personnel and for student placements from academic departments

  • Collaborate with other Children's Center Teachers and the Assistant Director in planning and implementing student orientation and ongoing in-service training for students
  • Conduct bi-monthly staff development meetings for student staff
  • Act as a positive role model and guide for students working in the Center
  • Cultivate rapport and teamwork amongst the staff
  • Provide thorough written mid-semester evaluations for each student staff member under direct supervision

  • 10% Facilitate ongoing communication and positive interpersonal relations with parents of children enrolled in the program
  • Plan and conduct parent orientation meetings each semester
  • Conduct parent conferences each semester with parents of children in own group
  • Provide daily communication with parents to share information regarding individual children
  • Respond to parent concerns and questions with understanding and acceptance
  • Provide information, help parents find answers, and make necessary referrals
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding the families enrolled in the center
  • Plan and implement parent education activities based on parent's stated interest and needs

  • 5% Participate actively in the ongoing programming and operation of the Children's Center
  • Participate in regular staff meetings, review of Center policies, procedures and ongoing operations
  • Interpret the program and program goals to visitors
  • Participate in events sponsored by the program for fundraising and community service
  • Attend training, conferences and courses to facilitate personal and professional growth
  • During periods of declared state or campus emergencies, state employees can be designated as "disaster workers" and may be required to report to the campus to deal with the emergency.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

    Working knowledge of:
    • Title 22 and Title 5 of the California Administrative Code for child care programs
    • Principles of individual and group behavior and the basic principles, practices, and major trends in child development
    • Methods and problems of organization and program management
    • Research and interviewing techniques

    • Design and implement a care and education program for families and children based on the program philosophy

    • Present clear and concise information orally and in written reports
    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, students and staff from diverse backgrounds, as well as with CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Experience
    • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job‑related education may be substituted for the required experience.

    Education
    • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in Child Development, or a job‑related field.
    • Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

    Preferred qualifications include:
    • California Children's Center Permit, Teacher level
    • Current Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certification
    • Good health and clear of active TB
    • Two years' experience as a teacher of children 0-6 years
    • Two years' experience supervising, training and evaluating adult staff
    • California Children's Center Permit, Site Supervisor level
    • Knowledge of and experience with Programs for Infant / Toddler Caregivers model for infant / toddler programming and emergent play based preschool curriculum
    • Experience working in a campus-based program
    • Experience with California Department of Education Desired Results child assessment system and NAEYC accreditation process
