General Description

Regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, large lectures and small seminars, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the "open door" concept serving a diverse student population. Grossmont College's Visual Arts and Humanities Department offers instruction and degree pathways in Art History and Studio Arts, including Ceramics, Digital Art, Drawing & Painting, Photography, Sculpture and Jewelry. The Ceramics Program is held in its own 5,000 square foot building with two separate classroom/workshop spaces as well as an adjoining 11,000 square foot kiln yard and work area/outdoor laboratory space.

Job Description

Grossmont College seeks a teaching artist with the ability to provide conceptual and technical instruction in traditional, interdisciplinary and emerging ceramics practices with a focus on engagement in social analysis and cultural critique. The fundamentals of ceramics are set within a series of courses which reference the rich history of ceramic practice in relationship to contemporary approaches, including wheel-throwing, hand-building, slip-casting, mold-making, and glaze chemistry. With such an intensive program of study, students have the opportunity to define their path, whether it is to transfer to a four-year institution, portfolio and professional career development and/or personal enrichment.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of three years of experience teaching introductory to advanced courses in ceramics, including knowledge and experience with both wheel-throwing and hand-building; glaze formulation; and firing electric, gas (low- and high-fire), raku, and soda. In addition, the successful candidate will collaborate with a full-time ceramics technician in overseeing the studio classroom/workshop, kiln yard and outdoor lab space, while actively participating in the development of interdisciplinary art and ceramics curriculum.

Demonstrated experience in managing and maintaining workshop equipment and materials; and in training students, student workers, and instructors on the proper and safe use of workshop equipment and materials is required. In addition to teaching a full-time load of 18 contact hours, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in curriculum development and assessment and contribute to departmental and campus activities that support the college mission and further diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism efforts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

• Master's in fine arts, art, or art history; OR
  
• Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in humanities; OR
  
• The equivalent.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must demonstrate:

• Qualifications to teach all collegiate levels of ceramics including beginning and advanced hand-building, throwing, high-fire reduction, high-fire oxidation, low-fire oxidation, raku, glaze calculation, slip mold making and use.
  
• Knowledge of the diversity of both historical and contemporary practices of ceramics including their role in the larger context of the visual arts.
  
• Successful experience in teaching ceramics courses at the community college or university level.
  
• Knowledge of health and safety issues and practices as applied to the ceramic arts, studio, and the college environment.
  
• Willingness to teach within an established curriculum and in concert with faculty to maintain a coordinated program and curriculum.
  
• Knowledge and/or ability to instruct, repair, maintain and operate equipment found within a college ceramics studio, including kilns.
  
• Ability to use computers for administrative purposes and for graphic imaging, glaze calculation within the classroom, and use of a Learning Management System for instructional purposes.
  
• Experience as a professional practicing ceramic artist.
  
• Evidence of creating, planning and implementing workshops, exhibitions or programs within an academic setting and the community.
  
• Applicants must demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, educational, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as the diversity in age, gender, and physical abilities of college students.
  
• Ability to work in collaboration with lab technicians.
  
• Ability to cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and the local community.
  

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge and use of photographic equipment and techniques as applied to photographing ceramic objects.
  
• Ability to prepare funding proposals for instructional and ceramic related projects for submission to internal and external funding sources.
