KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and web programming. KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio station for San Diego. Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS supports and furthers the university's educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its audience. It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.

The Chief of Staff position serves the KPBS General Manager and C-Suite by leading the daily operations of the executive office. The position serves in a role representing the General Manager at both internal and external meetings and assists with collaboration and communications across internal departments. The position will also oversee the execution of strategic initiatives and special projects for the station.

With a focus on internal collaboration and external relations, strategic initiatives, and special projects, the Chief of Staff will facilitate efficient decision-making and foster critical local and national relationships, guide the station's strategic planning, draft senior leadership meeting agendas and engage with external public and private stakeholders as a representative of the KPBS senior leadership team.

The Chief of Staff is responsible for but not limited to:



Executive Operations 40%
  • Lead and develop the daily operations of the Executive Office.
  • Work with all areas of the organization to provide and coordinate collaboration, communication, analysis, recommendations, and options to executive officers regarding high impact decisions; track high priority initiatives for the Executive Office to identify any/potential obstacles.
  • On behalf of the General Manager, represent KPBS in efforts with key public media organizations and within the public media system.
  • Collaborate and support Executive Office with station management, governance, and stakeholder interests and special requests.
  • Act as a principal liaison for the Executive Office, both with internal staff and external stakeholders, and respond to inquiries from stakeholders and various interest groups.
  • Communicate with executives on decision-making, program management, and initiative implementation; help determine key performance indicators and update dashboards as needed.
  • In partnership with the director of communications & marketing, oversee the development and delivery of communications materials and collateral from the Executive Office; support company newsletters, all staff emails, reports, pitch decks, and presentations.
  • Identify and improve current processes and coordinate organizational procedures for optimized efficiency and productivity.
  • In partnership with the General Manager, collaborate with human resources department on employee-driven and organizational culture building initiatives.
  • Lead and coordinate all-staff meetings (in partnership with HR and the GM), company retreats, internal/external conferences, cross-functional working groups, and other special leadership activities.
  • In partnership with the GM and the Chief Development Officer lead the organization and planning of the quarterly Community Advisory Board meetings, manage all communications with board members and about meetings and serve as the first point of contact for board members.
  • Manage and train the senior leaders' executive assistant.
  • Responsible for the review and management of the executive office budget.

Stakeholder Relationships & External Affairs 15%
  • On behalf of the GM. serve as the point person for developing and maintaining impactful relationships in the San Diego region, at SDSU and SDSURF, across the public and commercial media industries, and with decision-makers and influential organizations. These relationships include:
    • PBS, NPR, MMG,
      SRG, Corporation for Public Broadcasting (“CPB”), public media leadership
    • CSU System executives
    • Representatives of local organizations and boards that the GM, other executives and KPBS in general has relationships with
  • Manage key relationships and stakeholder engagement, and build a process to track and nurture key stakeholders.

Strategic Planning 15%
  • Oversee strategic initiatives from development through successful execution under the guidance of senior leadership; create metrics for success; revisit metrics regularly and evaluate progress against them. Work closely with the GM and Management Council to assist with the annual strategic planning process.

Special Projects 25%
  • Lead large, often cross-functional, organization-wide projects or initiatives; facilitate special projects, bring together important stakeholders, help drive decisions and ensure action items are executed on behalf of the executive office.
  • Operate at a tactical, strategic, and operational level, handling the oversight of projects that do not neatly fit within the organizational chart or that fall between departments or leadership areas of responsibility.

  • Consulting experience with a focus on operations management

Experience/Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis
  • Six year of related experience in a management or supervisory capacity
Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills
  • Experience working in a public media organization preferred.
