ABOUT CSUMB

Powered by an inspiring Founding Vision Statement, California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is a mid-sized comprehensive baccalaureate and masters granting university whose staff and faculty help transform student lives with a focus on student success and engagement through experiential learning, service learning in its regional community, and the promotion of multicultural and global perspectives on and beyond campus. With a vibrant, diverse student body of over 7,400 students, CSUMB is both a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).

The university's Strategic Plan prioritizes inclusive excellence through recruiting and investing in the development of a diverse body of faculty, staff, and administrators. CSUMB's sustainability initiative is to be carbon neutral by 2030. The university's faculty and staff, many of whom live in the East Campus housing development, appreciate living and working so close to the shores of the beautiful Monterey Bay. As one of the 23 campuses in the California State University (CSU) system, CSUMB offers excellent benefits, including access to below-market-rate campus housing and competitive salaries for faculty and staff.

PURPOSE

CSU Monterey Bay is home to multiple broad marine science initiatives: 1) Monterey Bay Regional Ocean Sciences Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), 2) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Center for Coastal and Marine Ecosystems, 3) NSF Geo-Bridge and Geo-Futures programs, 4) NSF Diverse Ocean Science Communities through Collaboration, and 5) California State University Council on Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (CSU COAST). The collective goals of these myriad programs are to engage more students and provide them with the experience and training necessary to successfully enter the workforce in a degree-related career path and/or to pursue advanced degrees in marine science and related fields. The Ocean Science Education and Student Professional Development Specialist (incumbent) will split their time evenly between the first four programs (50% of the position) and CSU COAST (50% of the position), and common responsibilities will be shared among the programs. The incumbent will be under the general supervision of the CSUMB faculty Program Director and the CSU COAST Director.

CSUMB is a Hispanic Serving Institution: as of Fall 2022, the student body was 46% Latino, and 68% of students identified as people of color. CSUMB is one of 23 campuses in the California State University system, which is the largest public four-year university system in the U.S. Over 70% of CSU students identify as people of color, more than one third of undergraduates are the first person in their family to attend college, and over half of undergraduate students are Pell grant-eligible. It is within these contexts that the marine science programs based at CSUMB are working collaboratively to create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive marine science community in which students who are members of groups that have been historically excluded from ocean and coastal science can thrive and pursue their dreams.
