Job Description

The Center for Health Equity Research (CHER) at Northern Arizona University is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar to be part of a dynamic applied health equity research team. We are most interested in candidates with a Public Health background in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field to contribute to projects focused on incarceration and health and other health equity topics under the supervision of Dr. Ricky Camplain, Dr. Julie Baldwin (CHER Director), and other faculty in CHER. The postdoctoral scholar would participate in a full-time program of advanced academic preparation/education and research training under the guidance of supervising faculty mentors to help prepare for an academic and/or research career.

CHER researchers work primarily with historically underserved populations to address health disparities. The research group, and NAU, are uniquely positioned to engage in meaningful research on the social determinants of health. NAU is in close proximity to tribal, rural, and other underserved communities, and long-standing relationships with these communities are already in place. The research group collaborates across numerous departments and programs at NAU and has developed strong formal and informal relationships with key community stakeholders in the region.

Project Data Collection, Analysis & Planning - 55%
  • Plan and support data collection activities including (but not limited to) observation, clinical measures, surveys and questionnaires, interviews, or focus groups.
  • Assist in data collection, data processing and analysis of data collected for research projects of the research group.
  • Analyze data using programs such as R, SAS, SPSS and NVivo.
  • Plan, implement, and maintain data collection, monitoring, and analysis systems. Includes data collection, analysis, and interpretation using advanced methods.
  • Effectively use available technology to facilitate the success of the research group and its associated research projects.
  • Act as liaison with other NAU Departments, outside collaborators and other contributors to ensure the success of research group and associate research projects.
  • Data collection and fieldwork may be remote or require travel to partner sites.

Project Development Support & Product Dissemination - 20%
  • Support manuscript preparation at the direction of project leads.
  • May assist with literature review, reference development, writing, and contribution to sections of manuscripts.
  • Lead the development, writing, and dissemination of project products.
  • Compose technical publications and reports.
  • Present project results to internal and external parties.
  • Produce peer-reviewed publications, white papers, conference abstracts and presentations.
  • Assist with research project assurances for studies including IRB, data use agreements, progress reports.

Grant writing & Development - 20%
  • Assist in planning and designing research studies focused on health equity research.
  • Support and lead preparation of grant reports.
  • Write and edit major sections of grant proposals submitted by the research group, including the background and significance, innovation, research methods, human subjects, timetables, budgets, etc.

Other - 5%
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent doctorate in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, or a related quantitative field is required by time of appointment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Public health background in one of the following areas: epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field.
  • Experience and knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • Proficiency in a statistical programming language.
  • Record of publications on which you are a lead author or co-author, illustrating experience with health equity research.
  • Experience conducting community-based research.
  • Familiarity with grant-writing process.
  • Experience disseminating research results to diverse audiences, including community groups, academic partners, and national and international professional forums.
  • Experience or a strong interest in conducting field research in historically underserved communities.
  • Experience working with a grant-funded research group in an academic setting.
  • Awareness of and commitment to NAU's EEO/Affirmative Action Plan and Safe Working and Learning Environment goals.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge
  • Knowledge and relationships with incarcerated and criminal justice-involved communities.
  • Knowledge and relationships with public health and health systems serving incarcerated and other underserved populations.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of epidemiologic methods, study design, other quantitative research methods, protocols, data collection and analysis.
  • Knowledge of proper safety and compliance practices related to the conduct of research.

Skills
  • Strong skills in data analysis and management using major statistical software, such as SAS, STATA, R, or equivalent.
  • Organizational and project management skills.
  • Leadership, coordination, and/or supervision skills.
  • Data collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $60,000-$68,474. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

Post-Doctoral Scholars are hired on a contract basis, renewable each fiscal year for a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years) according to terms of the Arizona Board of Regents' Conditions of Post-Doctoral Service. NAU offers an excellent benefit package to Post-Doctoral Scholars including generous health, dental and vision insurance; 10 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Participation in NAU retirement plans is not available to Post-Doctoral Scholars.
