Job Description

The Lumberjack Leadership Summit Health Coordinator (HC), under the supervision of the Program Manager, is responsible for collaborating with other staff to ensure the health and safety of all student participants. The HC lives in the dorm and is responsible for reviewing students' medical information as provided in their applications, administering prescription medications on set schedule and attending to any medical conditions of students while they are on campus. The HC is also available to evaluate any medical needs or emergencies that arise and make recommendations for treatment.

Medical and Health Oversight - 40%
  • Inventory supplies on hand; prepare list of needed OTC meds and first aid supplies; provide list to GEAR UP staff so purchases can be made.
  • Work with the Manager to finalize procedures and policies for administration of medicines and medical attention, including how medications will be administered off-site, at night, etc., based on students' medical needs.
  • Establish a system for staff to log in name of medication, time administered and dosage they administer (Lumberjack Leadership senior administration staff may administer over-the-counter meds if the parents have granted permission in writing and the HC is unavailable).
  • In conjunction with the Lumberjack Leadership Manager, develop an effective system for monitoring the precise whereabouts/schedule of students with special medical needs that warrant administration of medications at very specific times, special accommodations, etc., to ensure their Lumberjack Leadership experience is unhindered while their health and safety is properly maintained.
  • In collaboration with the Manager to review and update protocol for handling medical emergencies.
  • Prepare/stock first-aid kits for the residence halls, classrooms, and field trips, if needed (exact number and location to be determined with the Director).
  • Promote student and staff sensitivity to students with special needs.
  • Secure the Director's approval for any and all expenditures and submit receipts to the Fiscal Operations Assistant for any authorized charges.
  • Prepare staff orientation presentation and materials.

Medical Support and Preparation - 35%
  • Administer requested over-the-counter medications, as needed; document (chart) all medications administered.
  • Administer morning, midday/afternoon and evening medications in office during established times; document (chart) all medications administered.
  • In the event of a medical emergency, work with the NAU Health & Learning Center, local providers, and appropriate staff members to coordinate rapid response and transportation, per established protocol; chart actions taken. (Note: In the event of an injury or emergency, trips to the doctor/hospital during the day (8:00am-6:00pm) are supervised by the Health Coordinator. Nighttime trips to the doctor (6:00pm-8:00am) are supervised by GEAR UP Site Support Specialists).
  • As requested by program administrators, call and confer with parents of students who are experiencing medical difficulty.
  • Be available and ready during afternoon, evening and possible overnight in the event of injuries.
  • Collect medications from coordinators / chaperones upon arrival to the Mountain Campus; ensure they are properly labeled and secured.

Administrative Support - 20%
  • Attend administrative meetings, as requested.
  • Complete and process Concern/Incident/Medical Report Forms, as needed, ensure all forms are completed according to protocol.
  • Review and update the Concern/Incident/Medical Report FormReview, when required.
  • Review all student applications for medical information, cross-referencing to excel spreadsheet of all students' insurance information, medical needs, prescription dosages and times, over-the-counter medicine approvals, allergies and ‘special instructions,' making additions/corrections to spreadsheet as needed.
  • Prepare a log/chart for tracking/documenting all prescription and p.r.n. medications administered to students during the Program.
  • At the end of camp, responsible for boxing and packing up health and medical supplies, ensuring applicable items returned to department office.

Other - 5%
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a current license to practice professional nursing, certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Arizona.
  • At least one year of experience as a professional registered nurse, EMT and/or CNA.
  • Well organized.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience working with adolescents.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Well suited to working with adolescents. Essential qualities are patience, a sense of humor, and an appreciation for the ways adolescents are different from adults.
  • Responsible. Because our program is residential, all employees must assume a somewhat parental responsibility for students. They must be sensitive and caring, while at the same time firm in setting limits. They must exercise good judgment and conduct themselves professionally at all times.
  • Highly motivated. Creativity, attentiveness, and adaptability are necessary in order to provide the best possible experience for students in the program.
  • Flexible and able to work under pressure. Our programs are intense and fast-paced, and there is not always a clear difference between being “on duty” and “off duty.” Staff members must be able to keep up with the demands of a rigorous residential schedule and be prepared to pitch in if an unexpected circumstance arises.


Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

$1,500 stipend.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

This is a part-time, non-benefit eligible position.
