Job Summary

The College of Media, Communication and Information seeks an Instructor to support its interdisciplinary introductory courses for first-year and transfer students, to provide expertise and support for teaching and learning for first-year students, and to serve as the director of the CMCI residential academic program (CMCI CommRAP). The instructor will deliver the transfer student-focused Foundations class, Thinking across Disciplines in Media, Communication and Information (CMCI 2030), and will collaborate with the faculty member responsible for the first-year introductory course, Foundational Concepts in Media, Communication and Information (CMCI 1040), assist in training graduate teaching assistants for these courses, and assist in supporting the incorporation of essential first-year and transfer student acculturation to CMCI. As successful candidate for this position should also have demonstrated commitment to and experience with inclusive pedagogies and the mentoring of a diverse range of undergraduate students.

In addition to teaching 4 course each academic year, this position involves acting as the Director for the CMCI residential academic program, CMCI CommRAP. CMCI CommRAP provides a living and learning experience for approximately 200 first-year students majoring in CMCI disciplines who live in Buckingham Hall on campus. The Director is responsible for oversight of the academic coursework provided in the program that is delivered in the residence hall classrooms, the co-curricular programming provided to students in the RAP that supports learning connected to CMCI and the development of student community, and supporting and supervising the faculty teaching in the RAP as well as supporting the faculty member in residence who lives in the hall. (The Director is not expected to live in the residence hall.)

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Teach two courses each semester, one of which will be CMCI 2030
  • Collaborate with the faculty member teaching CMCI 1040 in providing learning related to first-year student development
  • Deliver orientation to and provide oversight of pedagogical development for TAs and undergraduate learning assistants for CMCI 1040 and 2030
  • Serve as a resource for the College in supporting first-year student and transfer student transition-to-campus
  • Upon request, provide consultation and training to faculty teaching first-year courses in CMCI to incorporate best practices for first-year student learning
  • Develop programs within the RAP that support student learning and academic development
  • Work with faculty, students, and housing staff to develop co-curricular opportunities that support learning outside the classroom and promote a sense of community among students, faculty, and staff
  • Oversee academic scheduling and faculty staffing within the RAP program
  • Oversee and appropriately manage RAP budget
  • Supervise faculty rostered in the RAP
  • Participate in CMCI recruiting outreach activities to prospective students to support student enrollment in the program
  • Work with the faculty-member-in-residence to help build student connections to the faculty member living on site
What We Can Offer
The salary range is $75,500 - $79,500 annually. Limited relocation assistance available.

What We Require
  • Ph.D. in one of the CMCI disciplines
  • At least one year experience teaching at the college undergraduate level
