Position Summary

Under immediate supervision, and in accordance with schedules or instruction, the Laborer performs the full range of general manual labor (moving heavy objects, removing construction debris, cleaning gutters and drainage structures, hauling waste and recyclables, cleaning carpet and floors, assisting trades and grounds workers, etc.).

The Laborer will keep a tidy and well-maintained exterior that is ready for the beginning of the academic day free of litter with trash receptacles emptied and receptacle lids cleaned and wiped. The Laborer is expected to keep properly functioning equipment and a safe and clean work environment. Thorough and accurate accounting of time and materials. Completion of routine work assignments and performance of additional duties as assigned. Consistent meeting of university needs in a timely and professional manner with increasingly improved skill. Follow-up on every project or task to ensure that all items are completed to the satisfaction of the supervisor/manager. A responsible attendance record, punctuality, and consistent meeting of deadlines. Performance of work in a manner that supports and facilitates the work of others in Facilities Services, Housing, and the university community. A positive and cooperative working relationship with members of the department and campus community.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non- exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Office of Housing Administration (OHA) is a self-funded operation responsible for planning, providing, and administering housing operations, services, and facilities with over 100 employees and over 150 student assistants with an annual operating budget exceeding $128,000,000. OHA provides housing for over 8,500 students in 23 communities with over 2 million sq. ft. of residential facilities. The OHA manages the operation of residence halls, apartments, and conference and event spaces. The OHA supports the educational mission of the Residential Education Office (REO) while providing business operations for all housing-related functions in support of a quality environment to enhance the student educational experience.

The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs over 200 employees (full-time and students) and supports approximately 8 million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land with an operating budget of approximately $40,000,000

Education and Experience

Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety; perform regular strenuous manual labor; and safely move heavy items in excess of 50 pounds.

Key Qualifications
  • Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations and to recognize, secure and report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Knowledge of safe working techniques and safety equipment and maintain awareness of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered (biohazards, chemicals, asbestos/lead containing materials).
  • Ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures.

Licenses and/or Certifications Required

Valid California Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,439 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,338 - $5,401 per month.
