About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Public Safety, the Dispatch Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Communications function for the Oakland Campus. This includes managing the personnel, equipment, and the work functions performed there. The Dispatch Supervisor also ensures proper communications procedures & compliance with department policies.

General Responsibilities:

This position may begin primarily as a 2nd shift (evening hour) position in order to support the dispatch function during this time period. It is expected that as the staffing structure develops, the supervisor may be expected to move into more of a training & leadership role than a dispatching role, although dispatching as needed will still be required.

Applicants must be willing and able to work any shift as needed.

The supervisor will be required to dispatch on a regular basis to support a developing public safety department. May also be expected to work as a lead operator for special events or critical incidents

The supervisor will also play a key role in training public safety officers in the equipment and procedures within the operations center. This includes but is not limited to: ARMS, radio system, inTime, SafeZone, Rave, Alarm systems, and Exaqvision. Part of this role will be to ensure that equipment is properly maintained, and that the facilities are properly supplied and professionally maintained. The supervisor will see to the continuing education, professional development, in service trainings, and training certifications of personnel.

The supervisor will work with public safety leadership to develop new policy & procedure, support new projects, and to make recommendations on the enhancement of the staffing structure and available equipment.

Other duties as assigned.

Dispatch Responsibilities
  • Receive emergency and non-emergency telephone calls
  • Determine the nature, location, and priority of requests and dispatch appropriate resources in accordance with established procedure
  • Enter, update, and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems
  • Disseminate mass emergency notification alerts when necessary
  • Monitor radio traffic, security alarms, fire alarms, and video security cameras
  • Provide referral services and victim resources
  • Research, collect, analyze, document, and disseminate public safety intelligence
  • Undergo initial training and maintain knowledge through continuing education
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualification Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, communications, or other related field
  • At least 3 years background or experience working in or managing a dispatch center or dispatch function.
  • At least 1 year of leadership experience in a dispatch function, public safety function, communications function, or other related field.
  • A valid U.S. Driver's License
  • Certification in a POST Public Safety Dispatcher course or the successful completion of a qualifying course within 6 months of hire
  • APCO certification within 6 months of hire
  • Knowledge of public safety communications practices and procedures and the technical language of Police, Fire, EMS, APCO, and Public Safety.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and coordinate schedules.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, coaching, and management skills.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Strong knowledge of computers, equipment, CCTV cameras, and related software.
  • Candidates must pass a criminal background check
  • Candidates will be subject to a drug test and psychological exam
  • Must currently possess, or must achieve within first three months; CPR (BLS/HCP) certification

Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • This position is an essential personnel position which requires working in a variety of situations including during holidays, weekends, day/evening/night shifts, overtime, and in a state of emergency
  • Requires frequent phone-interactions with people, dealing with regular interruptions, periods of concentrated attention, handling multiple concurrent tasks, frequent deadlines, and the criticality of task success
  • Required to wear department issued uniform while on duty
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in criminal justice, communications, leadership, or other related area is preferred
  • Certifications in any applicable training and courses related to the dispatch function & emergency communications.
