Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to establish a pool of candidates for current and future, full/part-time, temporary appointments at SDSU Imperial Valley. Work schedule to be arranged on an as-needed basis and will vary based on operational needs. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.

SDSU Imperial Valley is an integral division of SDSU located 120 miles east of the San Diego Campus. SDSU IV is administered by the Dean of the Campus, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, the Director for Business and Financial Services, Development and Community Relations Director and Assistant Director of Facilities Services & Projects. SDSU Imperial Valley offers undergraduate education, credential programs for teacher preparation, and various Master's of Arts programs. There are approximately 1,000 students enrolled each semester. There are 19 full time faculty members, about 90 part-time faculty, and 35 staff members. The ten building complex at Calexico is open 12 months a year.

Laborers typically perform work involving some or all of the following duties: move heavy objects such as furniture, equipment, materials, and supplies; assist in campus event set-up; load and unload furniture, equipment, supplies, and materials; clean assigned areas, including such activities removing construction debris; cleaning gutters, culverts, and other drainage structures; power washing assigned areas; cleaning roadsides, streets, and related areas; cleaning applicable equipment; and assisting in other cleaning projects; remove and haul waste and recyclables from areas of central aggregation, special events, and special clean-up sites; assist crafts and construction workers by performing unskilled tasks such as preparing work areas; performing rough repair work; tearing down structures; patching pavement; and performing pick and shovel work; assist in grounds maintenance, including such activities as pruning, trimming and spraying trees and shrubbery; removing undergrowth and debris; and using a spade, hoe, or rake to prepare or clean assigned areas; operate and perform basic preventive maintenance on appropriate hand and powered equipment and tools, supplies, and materials; some positions may be required to use a motor vehicle to transport and deliver heavy or other items.

The individual(s) hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU Imperial Valley at either the Calexico or Brawley Campus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • No experience required

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of experience assisting in the receipt, storage, or issuance of materials from a centralized stockroom or warehouse, including some experience in the operation of fork lift trucks or similar power-operated materials handling equipment.

  • Operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies.

  • General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and/or basic knowledge of general safety practices.

  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with a variety of individuals in a diverse environment at all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to work effectively in teams as well as individually

Licenses and/or Certifications Required

  • Possess a valid California Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of employment.

Compensation and Benefits

CSU Classification Salary Range: $19.26 - $31.16 per hour.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
