JHU seeks an exceptionalAssistant Director, Graduate Student Pathways, Inclusion and Successto support this mission. In collaboration with stakeholders in the Office of the Provost, the Assistant Director will have two core responsibilities: (1) planning, managing, and administering program activities and initiatives directed at promoting a diverse and inclusive graduate student community, and a positive and inclusive graduate student experience at Johns Hopkins University, necessary to advance graduate student success; and (2) supporting students enrolled in summer and post-baccalaureate pathways programs designed to attract, excite, and prepare students for graduate education in a range of disciplines. The Assistant Director additionally will support student outreach and connection to JHU graduate education programs, and support other initiatives directed at achieving the JHU mission to expand opportunity in the graduate education pathway and enhance the diversity of those with graduate degrees in leadership roles across our society for future transformative impact across our nation and our globe.

While relevant programmatic activities exist in each of the Johns Hopkins schools and divisions, this position is university wide, providing cross cutting programming, and sits in the Office of the Provost, working collaboratively across both the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Graduate and Professional Education.

The successful candidate will report to the Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Diversity and Partnerships (AVP). This position will be full time.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Student Professional Development and Community

  • Develop strategic relationships with programs to ensure continuous needs assessment for diverse JHU graduate scholars and to support their academic, professional and community- based needs.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive initiatives to foster student success from pre- matriculation through graduation. Provide referrals to and collaborate with appropriate offices and/or JHU faculty/staff to address graduate student questions and concerns when needed.
  • Support longitudinal leadership, professional development, career advising, and experiential life design activities for diverse JHU graduate scholars.
  • Work with JHU stakeholders to help build and maintain a network of internal and external professional stakeholders for mentorship and sponsorship of diverse JHU graduate scholars.
  • Support the design and implementation of activities to maintain cohesion and community among diverse JHU graduate scholars.
  • Develop and direct other initiatives designed to advance the longitudinal academic, career and professional development, and life course success of diverse JHU graduate scholars.
  • Support activities directed at celebration of diverse graduate scholar accomplishments.

Graduate Inclusion & Success

  • Manage and support the day-to-day operations of JHU graduate diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to successfully plan, implement and direct activities to promote the success of diverse graduate student scholars at JHU.
  • Serve as a liaison for the Provost Office to JHU graduate programs/departments and other internal and external partners, particularly those related to graduate student life and experience, and diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Serve on internal and external committees and working groups as needed.
  • Maintain continuous interactions and communications between the Provost Office and JHU programs to ensure that graduate inclusion efforts are coordinated and responsive to individual program needs and the needs of the graduate students within these programs.
  • Engage with JHU graduate program and pathways leads to collect and distribute information on pathways programs and initiatives.
  • Implement strategies to support innovative, effective, and efficient processes to support inclusive excellence in graduate education and pathways programs.
  • Work collaboratively with programs and Provost Office staff to plan meetings, symposia, agendas, workshops and programs that will support graduate student community and inclusion.
  • Facilitate and, at times, lead discussions among graduate programs and among graduate scholars to secure advice and ensure collaborative dialogue and synergy across programs and to enhance achievement of JHU's inclusive excellence mission and goals.

Graduate Pathways Programs

  • Serve as a liaison to JHU summer undergraduate research and postbaccalaureate pathways program leads on central JHU pathways program efforts.
  • In collaboration with JHU summer undergraduate research and postbaccalaureate program leads, develop, manage and administer dedicated cross-program JHU activities for visiting students and other affiliated scholars to build community and cohesion during their journey at JHU and to advance their academic, professional development and experiential life course needs.
  • Convene pathways scholars for longitudinal professional and career development cohort activities and experiential life design opportunities, and monitor progress.
  • Work with JHU graduate program leads and other JHU stakeholders to facilitate early touchpoints and opportunities for one-on-one and group connection for students in the pathway to JHU graduate education programs during both the summer and academic year.
  • Lead activities to engage and involve alumni of JHU pathways supported initiatives in meaningful ways.

Student Outreach & Connection

  • Work with JHU graduate program stakeholders to support the development and implementation of student outreach and recruitment plans and participate in both externally sponsored and JHU-specific recruitment events.
  • Promote JHU graduate and pathways programs through formal and informal interactions and communications with prospective students, peer institutions, associations, and collaborating organizations.
  • Plan, attend, and present at recruitment and outreach events for prospective students, influencers, and partners.
  • With JHU stakeholders, support the development and preparation of cross-JHU recruitment materials and communications for JHU graduate programs; serve as point person for cross-JHU marketing, recruitment and promotional materials.
  • Work with JHU stakeholders to promote JHU graduate and pathways programs through print, online, and other media platforms.
  • Send communications to targeted organizations to promote and disseminate information about JHU graduate and pathways programs.
  • Plan and manage individualized communications, presentations, chats, social media interaction, and individual and group campus visits, and on-campus and virtual outreach events for prospective diverse students to promote and disseminate information about JHU graduate and pathways programs.
  • With JHU graduate and pathways program leads, develop and manage strategic relationships with targeted organizations and individuals to advance student outreach and connection.
  • With JHU graduate and pathways program leads, provide data and reports in support of evaluating recruitment strategies.
  • Manage and support JHU graduate program faculty connections to HBCU/MSI partners to advance opportunities for prospective student engagement and connection to JHU.

Evaluation & Reporting

  • Support the development and completion of surveys and analysis for assessments of JHU pathways programs and graduate student inclusion programming efforts.
  • Develop and produce content for materials, reports, and publications to support pathways and graduate student inclusion efforts.
  • Work collaboratively with JHU pathways programs to develop and manage database to support tracking of scholar trajectories, and to fulfill approved external data requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

*Note: This position will require some work outside of normal business hours and/or weekends and some travel.

  • Knowledge of higher education student recruitment events, especially at the graduate level.
  • Knowledge of best practices for using websites and social media to engage students.
  • Strong client service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Analytical problem-solving ability.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor required to serve as a public face of JHU.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Self-motivated and demonstrated success in implementing new initiatives.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's in education or related program required. Earned doctoral degree preferred.
  • Five years' of progressively responsible related academic experience, developing and managing academic programs.
  • Additional experience may substitute for education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience developing and managing programs in an institutional setting.
  • Three to five years of experience with academic and/or career advising, graduate education, student success or diversity initiatives in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working with graduate students and/or with pathways programs.
  • Experience with and commitment to supporting diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Experience with outreach, recruitment, coaching and/or mentoring of graduate students in a higher education environment.
  • Experience with coaching and mentorship of graduate students on academic, professional and career development, and life design.
  • Experience with event management.
  • Experience with data analysis.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
