Research Technician, School of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Craniofacial Biology



Summary

The Philips Institute for Oral Health Research in the department of Oral and Craniofacial Molecular Biology (OCMB), Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is seeking applicants to fill a research technician position in the lab of Dr. Iain Morgan. VCU is ranked #17 in the nation for NIH income in Schools of Dentistry. The successful applicant will join a team of researchers employing genetics, biochemistry, immunology, cell biology, and structural biology approaches as well as in vivo models to study host-pathogen interactions. Job Duties:
  • Experience in both mammalian and bacterial cell culture and proficiency in aseptic technique
  • Generating stable cell lines using lentiviral vectors, protein immunoblotting, immunofluorescent staining, immunoprecipitation, FACS analysis of DNA as well as standard molecular biology techniques (plasmid DNA preparation, gel electrophoresis, PCR)
  • Expertise in performing dissections, tissue collection for histological analysis, preparing tissue blocks, and submitting tissue samples for processing is preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain the regulatory documents for research
  • Maintaining communal equipment, performing routine calibrations and assisting in the ordering, storage and maintenance of lab equipment and supplies
Required Qualifications:
  • BS or Masters in the field of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, molecular biology
  • Experience working in a research laboratory performing experiments in the fields of biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, molecular biology
  • Experience ordering and purchasing equipment and supplies
  • Independently manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines and ability to prioritize assignments
  • Exhibit respect, honesty, excellence, responsibility and accountability; stewardship, compliance, and a commitment to integrity and ethical behavior by example in day-to-day activities
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as an employee at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in relevant discipline
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, statistical software, simple programs and internet database searches
