Position Details
The Integrated Design, Engineering, Arts & Society ( IDEAS ) program, part of the College of Integrative Sciences at Wesleyan University, prepares students to succeed at the intersection of design, the arts, and engineering. Students develop foundational knowledge in design and engineering by working in collaborative groups on project-based studies.

The IDEAS lab makerspace hosts a wide array of tools, from traditional hand tools to rapid prototyping (such as 3D printers, laser cutters, water jet) to CNC machining tools.

Reporting to the Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and with close oversight from the Director of the IDEAS program the Makerspace coordinator/educator hosts classes for IDEAS , supports the teaching and research of other programs, and is utilized for independent projects by members of the campus community. The makerspace is located adjacent to a professional machine shop to facilitate collaborations. The makerspace coordinator will oversee the day-to-day operation of the makerspace, support faculty who teach in the space, train students in safe operation of makerspace equipment, and oversee student assistants, purchases and maintenance of makerspace equipment and supplies.

Responsibilities include:
  • Train, assist, and supervise students, faculty, and staff on the technical design of projects and use of equipment.
  • Support coursework and workshops run through the makerspace.
  • Supervise student workers.
  • Manage day to day operations.
  • Perform administrative and maintenance tasks (budget management, reporting, interfacing with faculty affiliates and others in the space, etc.)
  • Perform and oversee maintenance and repairs.
  • Work with and be a liaison to the machinists in Scientific Support Services.
  • Oversee safety requirements, safety policy and safety training for users of the Makerspace. · Coordinate with the Digital Design Studio ( DDS ) to provide interdisciplinary perspectives on Design and Engineering and enhance the capability of each entity.·
  • Establish partnerships with Middletown schools, community organizations or others to offer use of facilities during summer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in and a minimum of one year of experience working with a broad range of modern engineering tools and software in creating projects or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Experience in design and fabrication using a range of materials and tools. Experience with CAD , CAM and 3D design software.

Experience with Rapid Prototyping (e.g., Laser cutter, 3D printer, Water Jet and others). Experience in mentoring, organizing and managing design and engineering projects both at the individual level as well as a collaborative group.

Demonstrated understanding of engineering fundamentals

Knowledge of the safety requirements and safety training for users of the Makerspace.

Demonstrated ability to constantly learn new skills and techniques to keep the Makerspace up to date and meet changing needs of students and faculty.

Demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize among many competing needs and projects with different timelines.

Effective communications skills.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.

Some experience with maintaining and repairing maker space machinery.

Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop…)

Ability to work some evening hours, and weekends and work a flexible schedule that enables student-centered programs.

Ability to operate and move heavy machinery in the woodshop with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to be exposed to temperatures, fumes and or chemicals, heights and loud noises with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to lift or maneuver heavy object weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience maintaining a workshop, studio, or laboratory space. Experience with Metal and wood working. Experience with digital and analog electronics. Experience supervising students or interns. Experience with community outreach.
