Position Details
Research and Prospect Data Management is the strategic arm of the Office of Advancement (OA), focusing on the identification and qualification of donors, using a variety of business intelligence techniques, including data analysis.

Reporting to the Office of Advancement Director of Research and Prospect Data Management, thePresidential Fellowin Advancement Business Intelligence will learn techniques to identify and track donor segments, giving and engagement trends and synthetize comparative data results.

The fellow, under guidance from the Director, will produce and present a final project: Measuring Alumni engagement using an algorithmic scoring matrix.

Some expected outcomes in the project include providing interpretative donor outcomes, verifying engagement hypotheses, and building trust in data-informed decisions.
Responsibilities include:
Implement the use of data management technology through learning and understanding analytic decision support systems.Primary learning goals will focus on the five key principles of decision support systems for Advancement, as outlined below.

  • Data source:Focus will be on primary philanthropic indicators including, but not limited to, propensity to give, connection to cause, and affinity, using existing data sources provided by OA.
  • Analyze:Collaborate with Advancement colleagues to determine business intelligence data, namely key variables for modeling and algorithmic scores.
  • Situational Awareness:Identify within the dataset how measurements/models are collected, stored, maintained tested, and visualized.
  • Assess Risk:Monitor the dataset for data integrity as project is in development, as well as any long-term estimated risks, including data privacy and regulations.
  • Visualization:Design visualization tools with data outcomes, scoring matrixes, and performance trends.

Build datasets in R (and other analytic tools) to prepare and process datasets for research and conduct quality assessments.

Conduct statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics and regression modeling.

Meet regularly with other fellows and attend lunches to connect with senior leaders.

Other duties as assigned.
This is a one-year position starting on or about June 5, 2023

This position is located on campus in Middletown Connecticut.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and classroom, self-study or project exposure to any of the following:
  • Programming and coding using Python, R, or other mainstream tools
  • Analyzing data, assessing available data sources
  • Knowledge of causal reasoning
  • Awareness of statistical rigidity and correctness

Interest in business intelligence, including data modeling.

Effective, organizational, analytical thinking, critical thinking and time management skills.

Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Current Wesleyan student graduating in May 2023 or Wesleyan alumnus/alumna/alum. Strong demonstrated knowledge of databases and data structure.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently as well as collaboratively.
