Schedule Information: Per course schedule; maintains a minimum of 15 contact hours of teaching and 6 office hours per week for student consultation; evening and weekend instruction may be required.  Serves on college committees; participates in departmental and division initiatives.

Weeks per fiscal year: Faculty are covered under a 9-month contract period (August thru May). This position requires an additional commitment in the Summer from May thru August. Additional compensation will be awarded for this time period. This position may include some evening and weekend work.

Position Description and Duties: In response to the growing need for Respiratory Care professionals, Harper College has made the commitment to create and offer a new Respiratory Care degree. The new Respiratory Care Program is housed in a newly renovated lab within the Health Careers Division. The Respiratory Care laboratory features state of the art equipment for teaching and learning.

Harper College is seeking applicants for the Respiratory Care Faculty/Clinical Education Coordinator position. This is a full-time tenure track faculty position for the Respiratory Care Program. Faculty serving as Clinical Education Coordinators receive additional compensation for clinical coordination responsibilities that occur over the summer months. Some availability is required during the months of May through August.

This position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to participate in the development of a new program. The Faculty/Clinical Education Coordinator provides effective leadership in developing, conducting and ongoing assessment of the clinical education portion of the new Respiratory Care program.

Responsibilities include:
  • Management of the Respiratory Care program’s clinical activities which include, but are not limited to:
    • Organization, development, and administration of the clinical curriculum
    • Planning for, acquisition of, and communication with, locations needed for the development of evolving practice skills
    • Ensuring that appropriate supervision/assessment of students is available at all clinical sites.
    • Ongoing assessment of the overall effectiveness of the clinical training of all students.
    • Schedule, coordinate, supervise, and monitor all Respiratory Care student clinical assignments with regular and consistent contact with students, clinical faculty, and clinical affiliates at all sites.
  • Working with the Program Coordinator:
    • Ensure that student clinical exposures are coordinated with their didactic and laboratory education.
    • Maintain program accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
    • Complete programmatic curriculum, course, and program assessments annually.
    • Update syllabi and engage students in innovative instructional methods to achieve course objectives.
  • Teaching a minimum of 30-credit hours per academic year; utilizing Harper’s Faculty Contract to determine reassigned time for Clinical Education Coordinator responsibilities.
  • Ensure direct physician interaction and involvement in student education within the clinical setting.
  • Assess initial and ongoing clinical evaluation skills of clinical faculty utilizing interrater reliability methodology.
  • Assess initial and ongoing clinical site evaluations utilized for clinical education.
  • Provide academic service through participation in program, Division, and College committees.
Educational Requirements:
  • Baccalaureate degree from an academic institution accredited by an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education is required.
Experience Requirements:
  • Valid Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.
  • Current state license. (If not an Illinois license, the ability to obtain IL license within three months.)
  • Minimum of four years’ experience as a RRT of which at least two years include clinical respiratory care.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience teaching either as an appointed faculty member in a CoARC-accredited respiratory care program or as a clinical instructor/preceptor for students of such programs.
