Description of Position:
This is a full-time Athletic Counselor/Coordinator (80% Counseling, 20% Coordination) tenure-track position in the Counseling Department, within the Division of Student Services. Primary responsibility includes providing comprehensive counseling support to student athletes. Additional responsibilities include collaboration with Athletic Department, coaches, faculty and staff to coordinate counseling services that ensure student athletes maintain eligibility while achieving academic success.

Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to contractual duties for this position which will include counseling and program coordination, all faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, in their departmental activities and in the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the counseling assignment may be in the evening program. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. assisting students with decision-making and the exploration of their educational, career, and personal goals;
2. working with students to develop educational plans;
3. adhering to the schedule that has been developed with the Department Chairpersons, which may include individual student appointments, drop-in assignments, workshops, and weekend and/or evening assignments;
4. collaborating with instructional faculty in support of the goals of the institution;
5. participating in the college governance process, including attendance at all department and division meetings, and serve on college wide committees;
6. promoting the philosophy that integrates counseling and mentoring to support student learning;
7. participating in required training and activities such as conferences, regional meetings, outreach, orientations for students, community activities & social/cultural events, field trips, mentorship, advisory groups, etc.;
8. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
9. creating a positive environment that provides students with the support/motivation likely to enable them to transfer;
10. maintaining current knowledge of counseling techniques and other effective student support intervention strategies;
11. engaging in outreach targeting feeder high schools and community groups;
12. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
13. performing other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:
Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty.

Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.) OR California Community College Credential allowing work in the Counseling discipline OR the equivalent- if you do not hold the specific degree listed and believe you possess the background to perform this position, you can submit a master degree equivalency form. Desirable Qualifications:
  • Possess an equity-minded focus: responsiveness, sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students; and commitment to successfully foster an inclusive educational environment.
  • At least two years of experience, post master’s degree, working as an Athletic Counselor in a California community college.
  • Knowledge of athletic compliance requirements with ability to assure adherence to CCCAA, NCAA, NAIA and District rules and regulations as they relate to student athletes and transfer to Division I, Division II, and Division III colleges and universities.
  • A flexible self-starter with demonstrated leadership and experience collaborating with Student Services, Athletic Department (coaches, Athletic Director, support staff), and other academic counselors, faculty, and staff to increase the successful transition for student athletes.
  • Vision and energy to plan and organize programs to enhance student athlete success.
  • Proven ability to support and lead efforts to assist in retention and success of community college students, particularly student athletes.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the comprehensive nature of California community college counseling, which includes providing high quality academic, career, and personal counseling, both one-on-one and through teaching, including but not limited to developing educational plans specific to student athletes.
  • Experience teaching and designing curriculum for college-level courses and/or workshops in areas such as college success, career planning/exploration, educational planning, and personal development.
  • Knowledge of the California community college transfer process to public and private four-year institutions both within and outside of California.
  • Experience providing information about, and referrals to, campus-based support programs such as DSPS, EOPS, transfer services, tutoring, career services, financial aid, mental health, etc.
