Senior Designer

About the Opportunity

Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. With 14 campuses across the global network, Northeastern University believes that our world-renown experiential learning approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

The Roux Institute in Portland, Maine was launched in January 2020. An engine for economic impact in Maine and New England, the Roux Institute offers a unique model for graduate education, research, and entrepreneurship—powered by partnerships with industry, academic, government, and community organizations. The Roux builds talent and drives innovation through:
  • Graduate education aligned with high-growth fields and the skills employers need most.
  • A world-class hub for applied research in areas like artificial intelligence, digital engineering, human-data interaction, and advanced life sciences.
  • An expansive entrepreneurial ecosystem with opportunities for entrepreneurs to grow, launch, and sustain their startups

This hybrid position is based in Portland, Maine at the Roux Institute. The Roux Institute's Senior Designer will report to the Assistant Marketing Director and work collaboratively with our multidisciplinary in-house team including marketing managers, a copywriter, social media manager, a project manager and web developers. You may also engage in projects that engage with freelancers and/or agencies. You will also work with others across Northeastern University's External Affairs Marketing team and peers from Northeastern's global network including Colleges, Centers, and Institutes.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Roux Institute's marketing department is a growing team of strategic and creative professionals. We are seeking a Senior Designer who is passionate about creating work that spans across print and digital platforms.

Excellent people skills and a global-first, inclusive mindset are a must. Because Northeastern is a university with locations worldwide, you'll need to be culturally aware, both in professional interactions and in the work you produce.

Our Senior Designer should find joy in working closely with cross-functional teams and, above all, be excited about creating experiences that will help users positively meet their goals and engage with our brand.

Experience in higher education is not required, nor is it desired.

The ideal candidate is someone who:
  • Brings 4+ years of experience in multiple areas of design, branding or editorial in which proficiency in typography, color theory, grid system and layout are demonstrated
  • Can rapidly build fluency in brand guidelines and apply that expertise across all platforms
  • Toggles a variety of projects with agility
  • Embraces communications challenges and solve with visual solutions
  • Can visually convey complex information in a digestible and compelling way
  • Understands how projects may connect or translate across different channels and audiences (from environmental graphics to social graphics), and how all projects tie up to Roux Institute brand
  • Is both self-motivated and innately collaborative
  • Is experienced and able to communicate project timelines and expectations
  • Enjoys working with a variety of teams, both in-person and virtually
  • Communicates clearly with colleagues, articulates perspective with confidence and rationale, and receives feedback willingly
  • Is flexible about shifting priorities and is entrepreneurial and resilient when faced with ambiguity
  • Nimbly adapts to new systems, knowing when it's necessary to ask for help and when it's appropriate to proactively voice new ideas for improvements
  • Embraces the cues provided by performance metrics, and is open to experimentation to achieve goals

This job is probably not for someone who:
  • Does not thrive in fast-paced, evolving environments
  • Has a hard time making decisions
  • Prefers to work on projects where there is sole ownership
  • Resists change and evolution
  • Does not constructively accept design feedback
