Job Details

The English program of the Department of English and World Languages offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in English, English with Creative Writing Emphasis, and English with Secondary Teaching Endorsement. Minors are offered in English, Creative Writing, and Communication and Information Design. The English program also contributes undergraduate general education courses in composition, literature and creative writing.

Description of Job

This is a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position with the potential of summer teaching for additional compensation. Responsibilities include teaching 12 credit hours per semester with the possibility of reassigned time for research and/or service. Teaching assignments are based on department needs and candidate’s area of expertise, and may include courses such as first-year writing, general education literature courses, American literature survey courses, and upper-level seminars.

The successful candidate will have a desire to teach and mentor students who have been historically marginalized and underserved. The person in this position should have a strong sense of collegiality and a willingness to participate in a unified and lively department. The candidate will maintain a program of research and scholarship in the discipline, and participate in service activities for the department, college, university and profession.

Primary Duties
Engage in teaching activities including but not limited to:

  • Teaching baccalaureate courses according to program needs and candidate’s area of expertise
  • Participating in curriculum development
  • Contributing to student success through support and mentoring, including meeting for office hours.
  • Participating in professional development activities in order to stay current within the discipline and utilize effective teaching methods, strategies and appropriate technologies.

Engage in scholarly or creative activities including but not limited to:

  • Developing and maintaining a sustained record of scholarship
  • Sharing expertise within the academic community
  • Including undergraduate and graduate students in research when possible and appropriate.

Participate in service activities including but not limited to:

  • Advising students to help them set academic goals, ensure appropriate coursework is completed, and provide referrals to appropriate student services,
  • Participating in department, college, and university meetings
  • Participating in recruitment and retention activities 
  • Participating in convocation and commencement activities
  • Participating in department and university committees.

Salary Range
$54,000 - $60,000 for nine months

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in English with specialization in American literature by the position start date
  • At least one year of college-level teaching experience
  • Experience collaborating with other academic programs, student life, and various university offices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in multicultural American literature
  • Demonstrated success teaching at the college level
  • Experience with innovative approaches for teaching literature
  • Experience with open educational resources
  • Experience / desire to work with students who have been historically marginalized and underserved

Condition of Employment
