Position Summary:

The position provides support to the campus for the Re-entry Affairs at Housatonic Community College (HCC). The main function of this position is to build a pipeline of potential students who are formerly incarcerated by establishing relationships with organizations that work with this population. This position will build relationships with area organizations already working with this population, such as half-way houses and re-entry programming, and form partnerships to help in the career placement phase. This position will also build a resource hub that includes campus and community supportive services to help meet student needs. This PT position is funded through M&T’s Amplify Fund through June 30, 2025.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in education or related area or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.

Incumbents are required to have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following:
  • Demonstrated experience creating organizational partnerships
  • Experience working with low-income, diverse populations (incarcerated individuals a plus) in higher education
  • Experience in program management
  • Evidence of strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

  • Must be able to clear routine requested background checks for DOC and Re-Entry Affairs affiliate
Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Housatonic Community College Foundation, Campus Dean of Students and Faculty or their designees, the Re-Entry Affairs Specialist is responsible for effective performance in these essential duties:
  • Support all aspects of Re-entry Affairs at HCC.
  • Main point of contact between HCC and the Department of Correction Central Office (DOC) at approved facility(ies) and potential students in these institutions, and Re-entry Affairs affiliates.
  • Work with HCC’s Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Business Office, Continuing Education and Workforce Development, Information Technology, Academic Affairs Departments, and HCC Foundation to provide support for all aspects of Re-entry Affairs.
  • Act as primary contact for formerly incarcerated individuals, specifically as a connector to HCC’s noncredit programs and campus resources and information.
  • Communicate with potential students to help them enroll in a program that best aligns with their interests and skills, and connect them with Continuing Education staff for more information.
  • Create and build partnerships and relationships with halfway houses and other institutions that serve formerly incarcerated individuals. These partnerships are essential to creating a pipeline of referrals for this population.
  • Create a Resource Guide for formerly incarcerated individuals at HCC. This will include a list of community programs and supports that HCC has built agreements with to provide supports to these students during and after program completion at HCC. The Resource Guide will also include information and contacts for employers who regularly hire formerly incarcerated individuals.
  • Tracking all interactions with potential and enrolled students, status of enrolled students, and all other information required for funder reporting.
  • Meet with current and potential students to complete all application and financial aid paperwork.
  • Coordinate and administer all placement testing requirements in compliance with HCC policy.
  • Respond to Re-entry Affairs inquiries.
  • Work closely with the HCC Foundation to communicate financial assistance needs of students and to provide financial support. Students have access to emergency funds and this position will identify financial assistance needs and submit the required form so that students can receive the financial assistance.
  • On-boarding of students into credit and non-credit programs at HCC
  • Providing monthly check-in with students to ensure challenges are understood and supported.
