Pay Range Information

Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.

Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Provost, the Fish Interfaith Center Executive Director and Dean of the Wallace All Faiths Chapel at Chapman University will provide leadership and oversight to the manifold operations of the Center while fostering the Center’s record of exceptional interfaith understanding.

The Executive Director oversees the religious and spiritual welfare of students and the Chapman community. This position is not a teaching or faculty position. The Executive Director will oversee budgets, engage in strategic fund-raising, and set the vision for the Center’s building priorities, policies, and use. The Executive Director will leverage existing and emerging strengths and opportunities while managing and implementing change for continuous improvement. Working closely with a talented team of direct reports, academic and administrative units, and community partners, this position will uphold pillars of spirituality for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community. To that end, the Executive Director will be expected to preside and/or coordinate the ceremonial and ritual needs of the campus.

Responsibilities

Performance Expectations:
  • Upholds spiritual pillars and underlying values of Chapman University, fostering interfaith understanding and ethical engagement throughout the university
  • Provides support to Chapman students for religious and spiritual growth and integration of faith and learning
  • Advises and navigates delicate religious and diversity issues as they arise on campus with Chapman administration .
  • Creates and shepherds Fish Interfaith Centers long-range planning with Board of Trustee and Fish Interfaith Center Advisory Committees to align with Chapman University 5-year Strategic Plan
  • Oversees Fish Interfaith Center staff
  • Manages budgets for Fish Interfaith Center, including Office of Church Relations
  • Engages in strategic fund-raising for Fish Interfaith Center in collaboration with University Advancement
  • Serves as member of the Provost’s Council
  • Advises and coordinates with an upcoming centralized space governance structure to ensure appropriate Fish Interfaith Center building priorities, policies, and use.
  • Presides and/or coordinates events and responses to meet ceremonial and ritual needs of campus, including vigils and communications to campus in times of tragedy; memorial services or grief support; invocations and benedictions for Commencement and other ceremonies
  • Plans and presides over the annual Baccalaureate Service
  • Provides confidential pastoral care and counseling to faculty, staff, and students
  • Offers guest lectures and presentations to campus communities, as needed
  • Fosters productive relationships and effective partnerships with Dean of Students, Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Student Psychological Counseling Services, and other relevant campus stakeholders to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion and health and wellness initiatives
  • Fosters academic partnerships with faculty and Deans of Schools and Colleges, Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education, and other relevant campus stakeholders
  • Fosters relationships and partnerships with Trustees, administration, donors, alumni, faculty, students, and staff for spiritual care of campus
  • Serves as Chapman University’s community liaison for religious and spiritual communities within Orange County and nationally
Required Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Religious ordination or equivalent leadership and/or experience within a nationally recognized religious or spiritual organization
  • Demonstrated administrative, financial and strategic leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems with high level of diplomacy
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Commitment to interfaith engagement and religious diversity
  • Exceptional public speaking and writing skills
  • Fundraising experience and/or genuine interest in advancement
  • Interfaith leadership competency
Desired Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree strongly preferred
  • Higher Education experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated training and/or skills in pastoral counseling preferred

This is a 12-month administrative position reporting to the Provost with no teaching required.
