Position Summary: The Career Services Assistant Director provides effective career coaching and planning services and access to relevant information, resources, programs, and connections to students and alumni about resume building, the interview process, job searching, and salary negotiations. Responsible for developing and delivering career-related programming on career decision-making, self-marketing, job and internship searches, and networking.

Essential Functions:
Responsible for providing effective and proactive customer service to students, alumni, and visitors who contact the office.

Develop, facilitate and deliver career-related programming as assigned or at the request of faculty or student groups. Programming may include workshops, meet-ups, conferences, seminars, presentations, fairs, panels, site visits, job shadowing, or networking events. Prepare and customize the content as appropriate and market workshop development and facilitation availability to appropriate departments/units across Washburn University.

Advance career goal attainment for students and alumni through effective career coaching and access to relevant information, resources, programs, and connections. Meet with students to provide advising and coaching related to professional and career development plans including,
• Self-marketing (review and critique cover letters, résumés, and social media profiles),
• Job/internship searches (offer guidance on job search etiquette, researching employers, and improving interview skills),
• Assist in the evaluation of job offers and salary negotiation,
• Assist users with the department’s online system and self-managed education credential files, and
• Interpret results from assessment instruments or career readiness competencies.

As a member of the Career Services team, work with other staff to develop and implement marketing strategies for the department’s events and services. Support other team members with the preparation, coordination, logistics, budget and execution of events.

Develop data collection assessments to produce reports on the department’s activities, highlighting efficiencies and suggesting areas for improvement as supported by the data. Track student interactions and assess satisfaction with and effectiveness of services offered.

Research and implement best practices for using social media for career exploration and advising. Co-manages web-based information systems for students/alumni/employers

Build relationships across campus and with employers to enhance collaborative efforts to ensure the department’s activities are more successful.

As assigned and approved, teach one section of the class, Major and Career Exploration (WU120).

Represent the University and the department at professional conferences and workshops.

Perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:
A master’s degree or by the time of hire, in higher education, student personnel, counseling, or related field;
Or a bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in career services, advising, or counseling.
Proven effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in career counseling or advising in higher education.
Teaching experience.
Certification for either Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) or Strong Interest Inventory or both.
Experience with desktop publishing software such as InDesign or Microsoft Publisher.
Experience with administration of social media, website development and maintenance.
