The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) and Division of Animal Resources (DAR) invites applicants to apply for an outstanding opportunity to join our Veterinary Team as a Senior Veterinary Technician. The successful candidate will interface with units within the OVPRI and key research community groups. The employee oversees and manages the unit's surgical support functions. Clinical support includes assisting the staff veterinarians and research staff with surgical or medical procedures or independently performing clinical functions in consultation with the staff veterinarians. The candidate will conduct daily health rounds and diagnostics, ensuring that animals are monitored and appropriate actions are taken under the guidance of veterinarians. The incumbent will maintain animal health records and use the health observation system and/or phone to communicate with research staff about care recommendations, follow-up treatment, or actions. The incumbent will lead small group hands-on training classes and veterinary surgical observations.
While the duties are performed primarily during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, the incumbent will participate in a rotating on-call after-hours (4:30 pm- 9 pm), weekends, and holidays (7 am-9 pm) as assigned in advance.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Technology
- Active Veterinary Technician licensure in the state of Virginia (or ability to gain licensure in Virginia).
- At least 3 years of experience as a veterinary technician in veterinary practice.
- Master’s Degree in Laboratory Animal Science.
- At least two years of supervisory experience.
- At least two years of surgical support experience with USDA
regulated species.
- Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or must be attained within two years.
