The VCU L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs welcomes applications for an Undergraduate Academic Advisor & Student Services Coordinator . This part-time position will provide support to existing programs in the Wilder School and collaborate with staff to ensure that those who deliver programs and consulting are fully prepared.

Position Primary Purpose and General Duties:

The Undergraduate Academic Advisor and Student Services coordinator provides academic advising for students interested in pursuing studies in Wilder School undergraduate academic programs. The Academic Advisor will be assigned a caseload of advisees for the Wilder School undergraduate programs and monitor their academic progress towards timely degree completion. The Academic Advisor will address academic requirements and policies, and identify and explore educational and career goals for the undergraduate population. The Academic Advisor will support the services and programs in the Office of Student Success. The Academic Advisor and student services coordinator will also assist with administrative duties and manage programming and outreach activities for the Office of Student Success.

Other duties include: Advise undergraduate students in Wilder School academic programs (including orientation and retention efforts); provide guidance to students with resources to support student success; engage in outreach activities to provide information to Wilder School students through personal contacts, small group advising, and presentations; meet with students one-on-one, in small groups, and classroom presentations to provide resources, guidance and support for student success (timely degree completion, college transition issues, preliminary course selection, faculty advisor relations, residential life, study strategies, career exploration, academic policies and degree requirements, early alert/mid-term/academic progress reports, experiential learning, and time management). Perform retention efforts that include: Contact advisees who have not registered and discuss strategies for removing barriers of registration; actively participate and engage in outreach strategies for retention and engagement efforts; refer students to appropriate departmental offices and support services; utilize assessment tools towards goal objectives of achieving academic success self-awareness, and student learning; maintain documentation for tracking and monitoring academic success and retention; ability to support a diverse faculty, staff, and student experience and environment at VCU. Other duties as assigned by the USSA Director, Assistant Dean of Student Services, and Sr. Associate Dean of Faculty & Academic Affairs.

Minimum Required Hiring Standards:

- Bachelor’s degree.

- Ability to support a diverse faculty, staff, and student experience and environment at VCU.

- Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills.

- Must be detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.

- Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office Suite and Google's cloud collaboration services.

- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively as well as autonomously with minimal supervision.

- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse, faculty, staff, and student environment, or commitment to do so at VCU.

Preferred Hiring Standards Experience:

1. Master’s degree in counseling, higher education administration, student personnel and learning, or related area.

2. Professional experience in a college or university setting.

3. Familiarity with the mission of an urban-research university and experience working with a diverse student population.

4. Demonstrated ability to problem-solve.

5. Understanding of student development theory.

6. Experience making personal contact with students via phone and use of various technology platforms to establish relationships and encourage students to utilize services.

7. Experience working in a high-volume office that offers exceptional customer service while maintaining positive interpersonal skills.
