Job Description

Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse University’s integrated health and wellness center that incorporates counseling, health, health promotion, and recreation. As part of the Barnes Center leadership team, the Director Health Promotion is responsible for the oversight and management of all aspects of Health Promotion which consists of an associate director, two assistant directors, a program coordinator, a peer education coordinator, a health promotion specialist, an admin assistant, grad assistants and a robust peer education program.

The Director leads a university-wide prevention plan that establishes a supportive environment for student success and health behavior through the development and application of population-level initiatives including prevention activities and health assessments, engagement and cultivation of partnerships to address student health needs, and application and evaluation of theoretical frameworks and planning models that address individual and community health.

Public health initiatives include recovery programing, substance abuse prevention, sexual health promotion, suicide prevention, mental health promotion, and sexual and relationship violence prevention. Programs include pet therapy, mindspa, wellness leadership institute, and community wellness requirements for incoming students.

Qualifications

A master’s degree in a related field, such as public health, health promotion, health policy, or health communications is required. Requires at least 5 to 8 years of relevant experience, including significant supervisory responsibility.

Advanced certification such as Certified Health Education Specialist ( CHES ), Master Certified Health Education Specialist ( MCHES ), or Certified in Public Health ( CPH ), or certification eligible, strongly preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Evidence of ability to provide vision, leadership and problem-solving skills in analyzing health promotion needs of emerging adults, especially college students.
  • Experience conducting needs assessments and using results to guide programmatic decision and budget allocations.
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, program evaluations, interpreting findings, and developing plans to programmatically and strategically respond to the findings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of health promotion and behavior change theories and models, as well as implementing evidence-based programs/initiatives.
  • Knowledge of the ACHA Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education.
  • Demonstrated skills in developing and implementing environmental and policy changes activities and strategies.
  • Quantitative and qualitative research skills.
  • Excellent presentation/oral, written and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated fiscal management and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, manage time efficiently, and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and inclusiveness in working with populations of diverse cultures and identities in addressing issues of diversity, health, and social justice.
Responsibilities
  • Lead a comprehensive health promotion and prevention department and provide strategic direction for implementation of public health initiatives and associated programs.
  • Oversee strategic planning, implementation of goals and measurable objectives.
  • Provide direct supervision to Associate Director, two Assistant Directors, and Administrative Assistant.
  • Provide oversight for Health Promotion programs and services including Mindspa, Pet Therapy, Meditation, Wellness Leadership Institute, Health Hub, and peer education programs.
  • Directs campus-wide public health and prevention strategies to improve student health outcomes. Including, but not limited to mental health promotion, substance abuse prevention, sexual health, sexual and relationship violence prevention.
  • Includes strategic decisions and initiatives that address compliance requirements in accordance with state and federal laws (i.e., Title IX, Enough is Enough, etc.) and university required community wellness programs for all incoming students.
  • Participate on appropriate university and Barnes Center committees.
  • Includes but not limited to Chancellor’s Task Force for Sexual and Relationship Violence, ESE alcohol and other drug coalition, recovery programming work group, Barnes Center director team.
  • Plans, administers, and manages the Office of Health Promotion operating and associated budgets. Identifies and applies for relevant grant opportunities and funding sources for department initiatives.
  • Directs the development, implementation, and analysis of periodic university-wide student health assessments that provide baseline and follow-up health data, identify departmental needs and priorities, evaluate effectiveness of interventions, and track trends in student health status and behavior.
  • Includes but not limited to bi-annual sexual and relationship violence survey, campus wide substance abuse surveys, campus wide mental health assessments.
