Job Description

The HVAC /Refrigeration Technician performs skilled work in the installation, operation, maintenance, service, and repair of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and related electrical systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
  • Maintain, repair, and install all types of existing HVAC, refrigeration, and pneumatic control systems (including DDC controls).
  • Respond to hot and cold calls from campus departments.
  • Perform electronic testing and analysis on equipment and systems, using sensitive meters, computers, and pressure gauges.
  • Update the computerized energy management system as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and installation of equipment.
  • Initiate requests for parts and supplies as required.
  • Maintain, repair, and install electrical and plumbing components associated with refrigeration and heating systems.
  • Handle and transport hazardous refrigerants, chemicals, gases, cleaners, and solvents.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • General knowledge of commercial HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of single and three-phase electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of low-pressure boiler operations and repairs.
  • Knowledge of general mechanical procedures.
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance procedures for mechanical systems.
  • Ability to install, maintain, and repair large chillers and related equipment.
  • Ability to read blueprints and electrical diagrams.
  • Knowledge of computerized energy management systems and the ability to use a variety of computer applications.
  • Organized thinker with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to give and receive verbal instructions.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to enter essential information for department work order system.
Required Qualifications
  • This position requires an Associate Degree OR,
  • Five to ten years of experience working with HVAC systems.
  • EPA certification in refrigerant handling with all endorsements is required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
Preferred Qualifications

Certification in HVAC Universal, experience with a Computerized Maintenance Management System, and a Commercial Driver’s License.

Physical Demands
  • Position requires heavy physical activity, and the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Requires the ability to climb, balance, kneel, stoop, and reach.
  • Required to use close vision and be able to focus.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear; frequently required to sit, stand, and bend at the knee and waist, and walk.
  • Must be able to have repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement to type and work on computer.
  • Must have finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination to work on computer, telephone, and related office equipment.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Occasional weekend and after hours work will be required.

Additional Demands
  • Must be able to work in extreme cold and hot conditions both indoors and outside.
  • Exposed to the intense noise of equipment, machinery, and tools.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, extreme temperatures, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and working at height.
  • OT as required.
