Under the general direction of the Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Assistant Professor of Spanish will coordinate the language sequence as well as teach all levels of language, culture and literature. Research focus will be in Latin American and/ Peninsular literature and culture. The candidate should be prepared to teach these courses from an interdisciplinary perspective. Teaching excellence, promise of scholarship and near native proficiency in Spanish and English are required.

Teaching/Facilitation:
  • Teach all levels of language, literature and culture at the undergraduate level.
  • Teach and develop additional courses related to Latin America, Spain and global studies. · Design courses and develop course syllabi and assignments to meet Hood College and departmental curriculum requirements.
  • Advise the students on study abroad opportunities in Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Participate in departmental and program assessment activities.
  • Instruct students in course content and provide learning opportunities in and out of the classroom to achieve course objectives.
  • Evaluate students' learning styles, interests, aptitudes, temperament, and individual characteristics to determine suitable level of instruction and assignments.
  • Encourage class participation and provide assistance as appropriate to students in completing class assignments. Manage classroom interactions and establish and maintain a climate that encourages learning.
  • Advise students regarding their academic program.
  • Maintain regular office hours and contact with students as appropriate.
Scholarship:
  • Conduct field-specific research to enhance general body of knowledge and provide publication opportunities, or avidly pursue other forms of professional development.
  • Conduct research with students, as appropriate.
  • Present research findings and other academic papers at national or professional conferences.
Service:
  • Support and participate in College committees and/or professional organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet the academic needs of the institution.
  • Support the College initiatives to recruit and retain talented students.
  • Participate as an active member of the Hood College community.
