The University of Montana invites applications for an Assistant Director of Facilities and Custodial Operations to join their team. This position provides leadership for UM Housing (UMH) facilities, including develop and maintain the technical and professional expertise to assess, manage the work of, and supervise facilities associates and trades across a number of technical and skilled areas. In addition, this position assists the Director of Fiscal and Facility Operations with leadership and management of the facilities team in Housing.

The Assistant Director of Facilities and Custodial Operations provides professional assessments of facility conditions and inventory, including planning and implementing a 10 Year Capital Improvement plan. This position will collaborate with Housing staff to ensure accurate and timely loading of inventory for Residence Halls, University Village, and Lewis and Clark. This position will provide coordination and oversight of Housing inventory along with the Associate Director of Facilities.

This level assumes responsibility for managing all aspects of custodial operations performed within a large multi-unit university housing operation. This position is responsible for independent decision-making regarding pay and employment for all trades and maintenance positions within UMH; assisting as needed in the management and supervision of all maintenance staff; and management and supervision of all custodial operations and summer temporary positions for UMH.

This position will manage all custodial operations in Housing. This position will assist the Director of Fiscal and Facility Operations in the management of annual maintenance and repairs, equipment, and major capital projects and construction. This position is an active member of the Housing Leadership team. As a part of the Leadership Team, this position will write and contribute to Housing policies and procedures, strategic planning, marketing planning, and facilities master planning.

Position duties also include, but are not limited to:
  • Serve as a member of the UM Housing Leadership Team; work with directors to formulate departmental policy and practices
  • Serve on or coordinate department, Division of Campus Life and Student Affairs, and University committees, task forces, or special projects
  • Supervise (2) Supervisors I in Apartments, (2) Supervisor II in residence halls, and (26) Associates/Specialists/Technicians, including hiring, firing, and discipline for all custodial temporary positions.
  • Oversee personnel management of the custodians, evaluating, establishing and improving cleaning, techniques and procedures as well as assessing, planning and organizing and directing staff
  • Responsible for maintaining and managing inventory of custodial operations, equipment, materials and supplies
  • Oversee and order, receive, and distribute equipment, material, and supplies
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of orientation and training programs
  • Ensure all maintenance and repair standards are met in a safe efficient manner
  • Develop comprehensive training programs and tracking programs for all maintenance and repair annually
  • Develop tracking systems in custodial operations to determine on-going capital expenditures and inventories
  • Identify and correct problems; attending trainings to improve upon skills and stay current with the custodial operations
  • Provide direct customer service to members of the campus and to the community at large
  • Build and maintain a work atmosphere of trust and respect by establishing open communication among team members; recognizing the value of individual differences at all levels of the organization; taking steps to prevent destructive conflict and handling conflict in an appropriate manner; listening and responding appropriately to the needs
  • Support the Director of Fiscal and Facility Operations in managing capital budgets
  • Responsible for collection and disposing of all furniture, equipment, and supplies, bulbs following state regulations and recycling when possible
  • Act decisively, diplomatically, and exercise independent judgment and discretion to advance and protect departmental and University relations in resolving situations
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other areas of the department to assist in or oversee training student and full-time staff in facilities related processes and procedures as appropriate
  • In collaboration with relevant administrative or residential area staff, oversee the communication of upcoming facilities projects, ongoing facilities issues, and work order status and completion to relevant UM Housing employees, residents, and University staff
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements for policies, procedures, education opportunities, and issues of campus safety
  • Participate and be a member of the campus wide Committees as an UMH representative.
  • Work with and help Director of Fiscal and Facility Operation with work, training, projects, ordering supplies & capital equipment
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary for this position is $58,000 - $62,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible custodial experience and three (3) years of progressively responsible supervisory experience, or a combination of experience and education
  • Ability to read instructions, safety information, policies and procedures and apply critical thinking skills.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field
  • Comprehensive knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures
  • Comprehensive knowledge of custodial operations and management; and purchasing and inventory practices and procedures
  • Knowledge, skill and ability required to perform duties and responsibilities of their direct reports
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain a safe work environment; work effectively in a team environment; create and maintain a work atmosphere of trust and respect with all team members; work with a variety of diverse groups of individuals effectively
  • Demonstrated skill in customer service orientation; interpersonal, oral and listening communication; organization; time-management and delegation
  • Knowledge of, and ability to understand Collective Bargaining Agreements.
