TRAINING SPECIALIST – PHYSICAL TRAINER
DAWSON TECHNICAL COLLEGE


Dawson Technical Institute of Kennedy-King College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, seeks an innovative, collaborative Full-time Training Specialist to teach Physical Training courses to students enrolled in various construction trade programs. Under the general supervision of the Dean of Dawson Technical Institute, Physical Trainer will customize nutrition plans and contextualized physical training learning activities to build muscular strength enhancing work efficiencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Prepare syllabi, lesson plans, and other instructional teaching aids in nutrition, physical fitness and healthy lifestyles for students preparing to work in the construction industry.
  • Classroom/Physical Training Fitness Center preparation, lesson planning, classroom instruction (theory and contextualized learning and assessment).
  • Creates an effective learning environment that fosters students’ intellectual curiosity and helps students to problem solve using discipline-specific thinking strategies.
  • Prepares and maintains daily student documentation as well as provide student performance evaluation.
  • Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of the student learning outcomes for the course.
  • Provides reports, evaluations and documentation of training materials.
  • Performs testing and usability checks on all fitness equipment and monitors for broken parts. Reports problems immediately. If necessary, will place signs on machines so exercisers do not use the machine while it is broken.
  • Fills out incident report forms after accidents or injuries related to equipment use or mishandling.
  • Helps students reach their academic, personal, and career goals and cultivates a safe environment that respects the diversity of individuals and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
  • Collaborates, evaluates, and updates curriculum and courses.
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology or Exercise Science, Athletic Training, Health Science, Health Education or closely related discipline and current certification from an NCCA accredited program, along with 2 years of work-related experience.
  • Holds a current certificate in Personal Training, Corrective Exercise or Exercise Physiology from one of the following nationally recognized and accredited organizations: National Academy of Sports Medicine, American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association, American Council on Exercise.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification is preferred
  • First Aid Certification preferred.
  • Experience instructing a class of 10-20 students/participants
  • Experience with fitness/workout equipment
Chicago residency is required for all full-time employees within six months of hire.
