Adjunct Associate Professor - Horticulture/Plant Science



JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the general supervision of the assigned Dean, the Professor will teach classes in Horticulture/Plant Science. The successful candidate will provide evidence of knowledge and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, and academic diversity within community college populations, and how these factors relate to the need for equity-minded and culturally-responsive practices in the community college setting.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Participate in the procurement and coordination of supplies, equipment and materials for the Horticulture and Plant Science program. Support and promote student participation in Horticulture events.
  2. Assist with inventory records of equipment and maintain in proper operating condition. Maintain and supervise instructional facilities (for example, Horticulture Center – green house) as assigned.
  3. Promote and recruit Agriculture, Plant Science and Horticulture students from community high school programs.
  4. Support and participate in the Delta College Horticulture, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Foundations.
  5. Conduct organized classes at the instructional level to meet the educational requirements stated in the course description and the course information outlines.
  6. Advise and assist students in achieving stated course objectives.
  7. Evaluate the progress of each student; connect students to appropriate campus-support services.
  8. Participate in the evaluation of course offerings, including the revision of course descriptions and course outlines that reflect a culturally-responsive pedagogy.
  9. Coordinate with other faculty in the selection of textbooks, audiovisual and other instructional materials that advance the college’s mission of developing an equity-minded education.
  10. Keep current with new developments and maintain fields of competency within the framework of support provided by the San Joaquin Community College District.
  11. Maintain necessary records of student enrollment, attendance, progress and grades; prepare and submit required reports to the administration.
  12. Report to management any condition that might jeopardize the health or safety of students or the public.
  13. Assist in the marketing and promotion of the program by participating in college-sponsored events and by visiting local businesses and schools.
  14. Be familiar with and act in accordance with the Education Code and San Joaquin Community College District policies and procedures.
  15. Participate in departmental, divisional, advisory, campus-wide and community committees as part of the shared-governance process and service area needs of the District.
  16. Maintain office hours for students and participate in additional service hours/activities that benefit the student, college or community.
  17. Plan and complete approved professional development flex activities each semester/year.
  18. Participate in the departmental process of curriculum review, modification and the assessment of student learning outcomes.
  19. Work collaboratively with Success Teams to monitor, advise and ensure student equity and success through completion and post-graduation outcomes.
  20. Provide guidance and direction to readers and/or Instructional Support Assistant (ISA) as appropriate.
  21. Perform other necessary duties which assure the smooth functioning of the Division and Programs as assigned by the Division Dean and as outlined in Board Policy.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or Plant Science and Two years of related experience with emphasis in Horticulture.

OR
  • Associate degree in Horticulture or Plant Science and six years of related experience with emphasis in Horticulture.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in teaching postsecondary courses in Horticulture/Plant Science.
  • Master's degree in Horticulture or Plant Science.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt teaching strategies and techniques to different levels of students' ability and learning styles.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt teaching strategies and techniques to students from different cultures and ethnic groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to use innovative and creative teaching techniques and equipment, including the use of multimedia hardware and software and on-line instructional techniques.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing curriculum for discipline specific courses and/or programs
  • Demonstrated leadership, ability, and desire to stay current in the field.
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to work with business and industry in order to coordinate the educational program with the needs of the community.
  • Interest in or knowledge of teaching online and other distance education courses.
