Job Summary
The Museum Gift Shop Manager has full responsibility for the high visibility Museum of Art shop including researching, ordering, receiving, pricing merchandise for resale that relates to the Museum’s collections and exhibitions. This role oversees the reception of visitors to the Museum and telephone inquiries, and supervises shop and reception staff.
The Museum Shop Manager supervises 6-8 casual staff, and in the summer co-supervises two student employees/interns. In addition to managing the shop, this position manages the reception for the museum galleries and is thus essential for the museum to open its doors to the public. Shop staff are responsible for greeting visitors, ensuring that food, drink, backpacks, wet coats and umbrellas do not enter the galleries. The Museum Shop Manager works closely with the Museum Security to ensure that sufficient trained staff are on duty during student events at the museum, college events (reunion, graduation), and museum programs and receptions. Like that of all other employees of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art and Bowdoin College, the work of the Museum Shop Manager will shaped by a commitment to the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
- Manages all daily operations of the Museum shop including: research and selection and quality control of merchandise for resale; maintenance of all inventory, sales, and tax records; fulfillment of mail order requests; schedules sales and promotions for the shop.
- Manages reception and information desk for the Museum including: greeting visitors, fielding inquiries, and monitoring security in the reception area.
- Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, and supervises shop/reception employees. Arranges for informed and dependable coverage of shop and reception area for all open hours of the Museum.
- Supports the educational mission of the Museum by researching and selling inventory directly relating to the Museum collections and temporary exhibitions.
Education/Skills Requirements
Required:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Strong organizational and written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent retailing skills and customer service
- Demonstrated computer skills in order to maintain accurate records and generate reports
- Ability to work in a public space with frequent interruptions
- Initiative, dependability, and interest in Art History
- Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Art History).
Required:
- Minimum of 2 years’ retail, supervisory and management experience
- Retail supervisory experience in a museum setting or a non-profit organization
- Experience with public relations and merchandising
- The shop is open during the Museum’s operating hours (Tuesday – Sunday).
- The Museum Gift Shop Lead position is a half time role and the 20 hours are generally divided between Monday – Friday on a flexible schedule as agreed upon with the Associate Director for Finance and Museum Operations.
- Occasional weekend work is required.
