Position Function:

This is a 12-month, tenure track appointment at the Delta Research and Extension Center, Stoneville, MS with an academic home department within the Department of Agricultural Economics on the main MSU campus. The specific appointment will begin as 100% Extension. Extension faculty are expected to conduct applied research, publish, and maintain visibility in the agricultural economics profession.

Salary Grade : UC

Department Profile:

The Delta Research and Extension Center (DREC) is the largest of MSU’s 16 branch experiment stations with a staff of more than 25 research scientists and over 100 support personnel. Research and Extension activities focus on cotton, rice, soybean, corn and catfish production. Nearly a dozen regional and federal agencies with which to share knowledge are located in immediate vicinity of the DREC in Stoneville.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to:
• develop and assist in developing educational and applied research programs related to:
o farm management,
o marketing and risk management,
o farm policy, and
o impacts of emerging crop production issues on farm-level costs and returns, environmental quality, and rural communities. Examples of emerging crop production issues include new production technologies, existing and emerging plant pests and pathogens, and environmental programs and regulations;
• provide educational information and ad-hoc analysis to stakeholders via formal and informal channels
• train Extension agents through in-service training on programs and other educational content appropriate for agent delivery;.
• actively engage with subject matter specialists from other disciplines as appropriate to develop an effective applied research and Extension program;.
• offer workshop and county/state educational presentations and cooperate with Extension communication specialists to contribute content for mass media programs;.
• collaborate with Extension agents, other faculty at the Delta Research and Extension Center, and faculty in the Department of Agricultural Economics on the main MSU campus, especially those working in row crop production and aquaculture.
Scholarly output including articles in peer-reviewed journals, Extension and experiment station publications, departmental and college newsletter articles and popular press publications is expected. Extension faculty members are also expected to seek external funding to help support their programs.
The successful candidate will develop and teach educational programs to the appropriate clientele and county Extension Agents based on national, state, and county needs assessments. These documented Program Plans will include documented curricula that can be delivered and evaluated by the successful candidate and/or county Extension Agents resulting in measured impacts.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in agricultural economics or economics with specific training in production economics, natural resource economics, agricultural marketing and/or related topics. The successful candidate will have a practical knowledge of U.S. and global agriculture, enabling them to work with public and private entities and agricultural producers in Mississippi. Excellent interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills are required for the position.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with the education and/or experience of the candidate.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong experience in row crop agricultural production and demonstrated excellence or potential in research, extramural grant, and publication.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Applicant must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and leadership skills are also important.
