Job Description

Senior Pre Award Associate is expected to advise and assist faculty in the preparation of multiple and diverse proposals that vary in risk level and budget complexity for funding. They ensure compliance with university and sponsor policies, procedures and requirements, and are comfortable working in situations where answers are not always clearly defined. Senior Pre Award Associate will possess initiative and the ability to work independently and consult with appropriate parties as needed. It is critical that the employee, while working under pressure of internal and external deadlines, utilize problem solving skills and excellent customer service skills to work collaboratively and effectively with faculty, staff, students, and sponsors. They must be energetic and able to function effectively and independently in a fast-moving environment subject to external pressure and frequent interruptions.

Senior Pre Award Associate is expected to review the work of others, and provide training to internal and external customers, as well as participate in efforts to improve research administration including serving on internal and external committees. Subject-matter expertise is developed with sponsor assignment. At times, they may be reassigned to focus on a single large complex proposal that needs undivided attention. Senior Pre Award Associate is expected to work closely with associate directors and team leaders in coordination and operations; assist with team member training, as well as foster team work and collaboration. The employee demonstrates organizational skills and high commitment to customer service by applying skills and experience to the review of research proposals, contracts, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and guidelines. The position serves as backup to internal pre-award leadership working with departments with MOU agreements. As an authorized representative of the university, they are the last individual to review the final version of the proposal before submission to the sponsor.

Required Qualifications

- Master’s degree in a related field or a Bachelor’s Degree and relevant progressive professional experience in lieu of master's degree.
- Budgeting or financial experience and/or experience with nonprofit program administration.
- Demonstrated experience in research administration.
- Project administration and/or project management experience.
- Knowledge of university administrative and/or accounting practices and procedures.
- Strong customer service, time management, problem solving, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

- Demonstrated experience with federal and nonfederal grants and/or contract regulations.
- Project administration and/or project management experience preferably in a Research setting.
- Knowledge of university administrative and/or accounting practices and procedures.
- Certification such as CRA strongly preferred

Salary Information

Starting at $60,000 and salary is commensurate with experience.

Additional Information

This position is located in Blacksburg, Virginia and is eligible for either a hybrid or fully work arrangement. The work arrangement will be confirmed upon hire.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
