Minimum Qualifications

The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in African American Literature at the rank of Assistant Professor, pending final administrative and budgetary approval. The position will start July 31, 2022. We seek a faculty member committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and academic service. The successful candidate will maintain an active research program and teach a 3/3 load across a range of modalities, including sophomore African American Literature surveys, upper-division courses in African American Literature for majors, and specialized graduate seminars.

Qualifications for an Assistant Professor in English with expertise in African American Literature: PhD in English or closely related fields, including African American and Africana Studies. Area of specialization is open, but we welcome applicants with an active research profile in any period of African American Literature. Desirable secondary areas include Folklore, Environmental Studies, Ethnic American Literature, World Literature, Creative Writing, and Film. Candidates should have a minimum of two years teaching experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This position is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position, with a 3/3 teaching load. Faculty are expected to produce at least 2 peer-reviewed publications (or equivalent) every 3 years, and participate in committee work and related service activities.
