The Department of Family and Child Studies and the Department of Reading Education and Special Education (soon to be the Department of Child Development, Literacy, and Special Education) at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate level in the Department. The Child Development programs prepare students in the areas of Child Development and Birth through Kindergarten teacher education and serve approximately 120 majors. The Department also houses the Lucy Brock Child Development Laboratory School, a Reggio-inspired program, which serves approximately ninety-four children and their families in three on-campus classrooms and three NC PreK classrooms in the public schools. We are seeking applicants who have expertise in Family and Child Studies to join our collaborative team. The successful applicant will be appointed to a full-time, nine-month position to begin August 2023 with the possibility of summer teaching with additional compensation. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required qualifications for this position include:
  • Doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies ( HDFS ), Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or closely related field by August 2023. Candidates who are ABD will be considered; doctoral degree must be completed by the start date.
  • Experience or potential to teach undergraduate courses across the family and child studies curriculum; and
  • Research engagement on child development, preschool settings, teacher development, parenting, and families with young children, and/or similar research areas.

  • Experience or potential to teach undergraduate courses across the family and child studies curriculum with a focus on middle childhood, adolescence, and families studies;
  • Commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy and experience working with intellectually, culturally, and linguistically diverse populations;
  • Ability to use engaging technology as a teaching/learning tool;
  • Experience with or interest in online or hybrid instruction;
  • Established record of, or potential for, securing external funding.

Description of the Department or Unit

The Reich College of Education offers a broad range of comprehensive degree programs: Baccalaureate, Masters, Specialist and Doctoral levels as well as programs leading to certification and licensure. The college seeks to provide a well-balanced program of classroom and clinical experiences while maintaining a cooperative, forward-thinking posture, with emphasis on excellence in teaching, learning, research, scholarship, and outreach. This position resides in the Departments of Family and Child Studies and Reading Education and Special Education (soon to be the Department of Child Development, Literacy, and Special Education) which offers innovative programs focusing on all facets of child development, family studies, reading, writing, language, specific areas of special education, Lucy Brock Child Development Laboratory School, and the Anderson Reading Clinic. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties include teaching, research, and service. Specific responsibilities will include:
  • Developing and teaching undergraduate general education courses related to family development and child development (birth-adolescence), face-to-face and online;
  • Actively engaging in scholarly work;
  • Engaging in service to the program, department, college, university, profession, and community;
  • Collaborating with colleagues in the program, department, university, BK-12+ schools, and programs/agencies serving children and families;
  • Advising undergraduate and graduate students.
