The chairperson of the Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment is a tenured faculty position with 9 month academic and 12 month administrative duties beginning July 1, 2023.

The department chair is a visionary leader and capable administrator that understands the importance of compliance, applies the tenets of effective advocacy, pursues innovation with an entrepreneurial approach, and advances the mission and vision of the department, the College, and Appalachian State University.

Description of the Department or Unit

The Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment ( STBE ) is in the College of Fine and Applied Arts. STBE has approximately 800 students and offers two undergraduate degrees: the B.S. in Building Sciences and the B.S. in Sustainable Technology. The department also has a Masters program offering the M.S. in Technology. The faculty exemplify a commitment to excellence in teaching and interdisciplinary research focused on renewable energy solutions; sustainable design and construction of healthy, high-performance buildings; and providing experiential learning opportunities. Our students have achieved notable successes in national and international competitions including the American Solar Challenge / Formula Sun Grand Prix, USDOE Solar Decathlon, Solar Decathlon Europe, USEPA P3, USDOE Solar District Cup and USDOE EnergyTECH University Prize ( https://stbe.appstate.edu/ ).

The College of Fine and Applied Arts ( CFAA ) at Appalachian State University is a dynamic and transdisciplinary academic unit offering 30 undergraduate degree programs, one graduate degree program and 13 minors through its seven member departments: Applied Design; Art; Communication; Military Science and Leadership; Sustainable Development; Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment; and Theatre and Dance ( https://faa.appstate.edu/ ).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The chairperson: effectively advocates for the department including engagement in Appalachian’s new Innovation District ( https://today.appstate.edu/2022/03/25/innovation-district ); mentors faculty and staff to foster their professional growth; works collaboratively to maintain program excellence; supports efforts to promote student opportunity and achievement; develops and manages a departmental budget; participates in planning capital improvements; and oversees departmental policies and initiatives.
