Minimum Qualifications

An earned doctorate in architecture, engineering, or a construction-related field is required by the time of hire. A Master of Architecture degree with professional licensure or a Master with professional engineering license may also be considered.

Applicants for this Building Sciences Faculty position shall demonstrate expertise in at least one of the following focal areas: Virtual Design and Construction; Practice of Sustainable Construction; Building Science; Construction Project Administration and Contracts; Construction Management Techniques; Automation in Construction; Engineered Timber Design and Construction; Indoor Environmental Quality; Construction Health and Safety; Construction Education; Building Performance and Energy Management.

Description of the Department or Unit

STBE houses three academic programs: the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Sustainable Technology; the BS in Building Sciences, with three concentrations; and the Master of Science in Technology, with two concentrations. The Department includes 30 full-time faculty serving approximately 800 undergraduate and 20 graduate students. STBE has played an integral role in building the University’s sustainability agenda, which features prominently in the University’s Strategic Plan. Within STBE, faculty exemplify a commitment to applied research and interdisciplinary, experiential learning. Students in these programs have achieved notable successes in national and international competitions such as the Formula Sun Grand Prix and American Solar Challenge, the USDOE Race to Zero and Solar Decathlon, Solar Decathlon Europe, and the US EPA P3 program, among others.

The Building Sciences Program is structured to establish a broad set of foundational skills and knowledge related to the whole life cycle of the built environment, including design, construction, and operations. This foundation acts as a catalyst for growth and success in our graduates’ careers. Extending beyond foundational principles, the program is committed to priming students’ minds to deconstruct, organize, and solve a wide range of problems related to the built environment in a team-based setting. Students go on to career paths in architecture, construction, building performance assessment, and facilities management.

The College of Fine and Applied Arts ( CFAA ) at Appalachian State University is a dynamic and transdisciplinary academic unit offering 30 undergraduate degree programs, one graduate degree program and 13 minors through its seven member departments: Applied Design; Art; Communication; Military Science and Leadership; Sustainable Development; Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment; and Theatre and Dance ( https://faa.appstate.edu/ ).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the position is teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Building Sciences program that connects the candidate’s area of expertise with the general breadth of the program. Other responsibilities include maintaining an active scholarly agenda, supporting program development, advising students, collaborating with professionals in the building industry, and participating in service work.
